Been to dive bar a few times now.

Ironically I thought the best part of the street energy was the lack of cars of K Street. You have people all over the place.

I still think re-introducing cars to K Street is a incredibly short sided and a huge waste of money and a mistake.

Fortunately it won't be that huge a waste of money--they are not going to re-pave the street or rip out the light rail tracks, just add stop signals and upgrade light rail so if a train is approaching it overrides the signal, allowing cars to get out of the way. There will be one turnout for passenger drop off/valet on each block, but no street parking. Top speed will be 15 MPH and they will have to share the street with bikes and light rail--and maybe even streetcars.

If you hang out on K Street enough you will note that people already drive on the light rail tracks pretty frequently, it happens often enough that designating it as a roadway makes a certain sort of messed-up sense. It also lets the city take advantage of certain types of transit funding. It has also been good for potential tenants--a few have moved in even since the announcement of a plan to reintroduce cars to K Street. And if it ends up being a really bad failure, it won't be particularly hard to change it back.

Actually I'm going to have to disagree. I think a large part of K Street's stagnation has directly been tired to the lack of traffic. Also, as Mr. Burg has pointed out, they will not be spending much money to renovate the road in order to allow traffic through. Most of the traffic will mainly be drop offs anyways, and there won't be any parking available. I think it will reintroduce energy unto K Street and further act as a catalyst for sustained growth.

Have you been after 11pm on weekend since Dive Bar opened?

There's tons of people walking in the middle of the street, that will go away once you have cars.

I saw that all the time last summer during midnight movies at the Crest--the combined crowd from the Crest and Cosmo often spilled out into the street, since light rail stops running at 9-10 PM. One assumes that at some point light rail will run later (ideally, until after 2 AM so people can ride home instead of driving!) and pedestrians will have to avoid trains, which will limit the amount of pedestrians in the middle of K Street at night.

The project is still going to cost about $2 million, diverting from other funds that were supposed to be used to make P and Q Street into two-way streets. Whether that counts as "cheap" depends on how much you follow road projects.
