I lived and worked in Vacaville briefly, and the whole Fairfield / Vacaville area is very generic and suburban. It's great for families but I wouldn't call it ideal for a single person. I knew someone in your situation who commuted from Davis to Fairfield and said it took about 30 minutes. He was very happy with his choice.

Depending on your housing budget, another option would be to live in North Berkeley, West Berkeley, or Albany near the freeway. This is a reverse commute, with busy but moving traffic, that takes around 45 minutes. Some of the younger people at my job in Vacaville opted for this commute in order to live in a youthful, trendy area with a lot of singles. This area would feel more urban and be nearer to urban pockets than Davis / Sacramento.

Default Commuting

Commuting to Berkeley sounds interesting. Is there any public transportation that would allow this?

You would have to take a bus the entire way (with a few transfers) or take BART Berkeley to Richmond, then take a bus from there to Fairfield This website is awesome for checking commute times and costs, you can check via car or public transportation: 511 SF BAY

Are you talking about living in Berkeley and taking a bus to Fairfield? You could take BART to El Cerrito Del Norte BART then Solano Express Route 90 to Fairfield. Problem is when you get to Fairfield, I doubt your work will be close to the Fairfield Transportation Center so you either have to transfer to a local bus, which is slow, or find some other way like bike, Uber, etc..

There's also the CapitolCorridor Amtrack train which has stops in Emeryville and Berkeley and would get you to Fairfield. You'd also have the issue of getting to/from work once you've arrived at the station - but the train is bike friendly so it's an option to consider.

I'd say that the Berkeley area is probably the most suitable area if you don't mind a bit of a commute. Housing will be ultra-competitive and very expensive. Traffic can also be pretty awful around there - especially on the freeways. But if I could live anywhere in the world - Berkeley would come close to the top of my list.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely be researching commuting options to Berkeley and possibly Davis.
