I'm considering a move in about a year, and have been drawn to Sac via resident and visiting friends experiences. I will visit in the summer of 2019, and will use that visit to take a look around the area and decide if its for me. I am not a homeowner and will be looking for a rental of some kind. My retirement income will be low unless or until I find work. Can a person live in the sac area on about $2k/month?

Do you mean $2k in rent alone, or $2k for all expenses--rent, utilities, car, food?

Yes if you qualify for low income senior housing, there are some nice complexes but I have no idea if they have vacancies

Here's a senior low income complex downtown https://www.raystoneseniors.com/seni...ud-application

Here's a site with a list of some of the properties https://onefatherslove.com/low-incom...ing-sacramento

And you can always check 211.org for housing options

It wouldn't surprise me, there are crappy 2 bedroom rentals in the Iron Triangle in Richmond renting for $2300.

Yes, not going to be glamorous. You can find studios for $700-900/month. Won't be in the greatest of neighborhoods and they'll be dumps. Leaves you another $1,200 to live off. Easily done. If you can get into some welfare housing or get a job it would be easier. A dumpy apartment in the grid is probably $1,200. Pocket is a bit cheaper and a nice area. Similar rent but you can get decent apartments rather than dumps.
