Does any place sell used catalytic converters? My car failed SMOG in Sacramento, CA for having incorrect cat installed.

I have ordered the correct part online 18160-RAD-L11 for about $1100 but it is on national back order and my reg is due in July 2020.

I'm wondering if I can get a used cat instead and have my mechanic install it for me?

Depending on the year and model any Junk Yard should have one.

EPA considers it a violation of the policy to install a used converter from a salvage yard or sell it for reuse unless it has been properly tested and labeled. Similarly, it is a violation to install an untested used converter brought in by a customer, even if the customer insists that the used converter came off his/her vehicle.

No. It's illegal to sell a used converter.

Try Car-Part.com and filter it for distance from your home. All the good auto salvage yards subscribe to them.

The problem with catalytic converters is that every one has a small amount of platinum. Many auto salvage yards will pool their incoming converters and sell them in bulk to other salvage yards specializing in removing the core and selling the cores to recyclers.

There's one family in a city I lived in that had 3 large auto salvage operations. But their catalytic converter yard had a literal mountain of old converters. And what a cash cow that business was.

Thanks for the tip but I'm not seeing catalytic converter under the Parts option. Maybe they indeed are illegal to sell used.

they are illegal to sell used, and it's not state by state - it's a violation of federal law.

But, how would you find the right catalytic converter for your car in a 'mountain of old converters'? I'm wondering if that mountain of converters are simply there waiting pick up by a recycler or smelter.
