I was reading about Sacramento McClellan Airport online. It has a much longer runway than those at SacIntl. It would be nice to leverage it for more than general aviation.

Have you been there? It's a closed Air Force base converted to industrial park use, not a commercial/passenger airport.

The base closed mid 1990's to 2000, but the runway(s) was used regularly after that for good reason as it is 10,599 feet long.

Lately though, I don't know how often they use the runway. It is likely used for fire fighting planes and various others including helicopters. There have been some historic takeoff and landings on the runway. I think AirOne was there at least a few times.

In comparison with Sacramento International airport (SMF), SMF has two runways at 8,500 feet each plenty long for most commercial aircraft, large and small.

Even the very large A350 and 787 jets would be able to use those runways just fine. But it would be ideal if at least one of those runways increased its length to at least 10,000, or even 11,000 feet.

McClellan still used for certain para-military activities. It's utilized by Cal Fire (Department of Forestry) as a base for its tanker planes as well as by the United States Coast Guard.

If Sacramento wanted someday to service flights to Asia, the extra length would be useful. San Diego has flights to Japan and Europe. Its runway is about 9400 feet long. Admittedly, it might be a while before that's needed.

Had no idea there was another McClellan named airport. Since they're both in California (albeit 500 miles apart) ya gotta wonder if there's ever been confusion between the two.

McClellan is also the name of the Carlsbad Airport (CRQ)

The former McClellan AFB was named after Major Hezekiah McClellan, a pioneer in arctic aeronautical tests. In 1993, the base was selected by the Pentagon for closure.
