Thank you for responding....we love a good steak...are wild about thai food and authentic style mexican food. Love a GREAT breakfast......with good coffee or mocha. I love pretty much any kind of fish. Have also been known to indulge in a goooood blueberry milkshake from time to time. I think that pretty much covers it.

Sherri's for the pie.

Are you doing I-5 or Hwy 101?

Great breakfast would be Word of Mouth Bistro. Busick Court is good too.

You might like Red Ginger which is Asian fusion. Thai Beer is also supposed to be good but I haven't been there since I'm not a huge Thai food fan.

Otherwise good food in Salem:
Crooked House Bistro-french bistro
La Capitale-french inspired
Andaluz-Spanish Tapas Bar
Da Vinci's
Venti's-Mediterranean influenced food. Good atmosphere.
Wild Pear-PNW style food
Amadeus-PNW style, tends to have really slow service
Carniceria Y Taqueria El Rodeo is a Mexican meat market but they have good tacos there.
La Margarita has some unusual combinations and interesting food. They use a lot of mesquite grilled things in their menu.
Christo's has decent pizza
French Press has yummy coffee. Crepes are decent but sometimes they overcook them. Good place for breakfast.
Original Pancake house is good for breakfast too.
There is a good Vietnamese restaurant next to the Vietnamese grocery store. I can't remember the name of it.
Broken Bread is yummy too.

Skip Sherri's for pie and go to Willamette Valley Fruit Farms. Now they have pie. So yummy...

Wow....thanks for the data on the places to eat.....I have not quite narrowed down our route yet. Although, we want to stay off of interstate as much as possible....so we can experience more than just the well traveled main routes. We want to see things and places the way locals do. Good food, nice people...Mom and Pop places.....aka the road less traveled..

Actually the best pies are right here in my Kitchen. We just did a couple of York Apple pies from our century old tree and canned a few more jars of Melrose apple sauce from the old pasture tree. On the way back up the hill we had a good breakfast of the last of the blackberries along the fence row. We ate all of our Blueberries before we could gather enough to freeze this year, and I still have two pieces of fresh from the side yard Blackberry Cobbler we made last weekend.

Now as to Shari's. Never by-pass them. They are all over the state and the pies are some of the best.

There is also a place on 22 going to the coast from Salem right at the Hwy 51 to Independence cutoff that has good food, great pies, and fresh shortcakes. Berry, Strawberry, and Peach. Comes right from their farm to the fruit stand/restaurant.
