Moderator cut: not needed I will be relocating to Utah, Salt Lake City, to work on a project for the next 2+ years. I apologize if these questions have been answered before.

1. When speaking with a friend of mine about my upcoming relocation he mentioned something about paying tithes. Is this considered the status-quo for non-mormons? What exactly is a tithe?

2. I'm not religious and do not consider myself a member of any organized religion, nor do I want to be one. Is that going to be a problem? Will I be looked down upon? Will it be difficult to find friends because of this?

3. I've heard that there are very different laws regarding alcohol in Utah. Any idea where I could find out this info? Or could someone give me a quick breakdown?

If it helps, I'll be relocating from the D.C. area.
Thanks

A tithe is an offering of 10% of your income to your church. It is totally voluntary and many faiths, not just LDS, support the idea. The term comes from the Bible.

A tithe is a monetary offering one makes to their church. For the LDS it is generally 10% of their gross income a year. I am not familiar enough with all other religions to know whether they tithe also, but if you don't belong to a religion, you do not tithe. In the Catholic church, we do take up collections during church, but it is left up to you to give what you feel you can.

Although I am Catholic, I am pretty non practicing and it is not an issue. Most people (the ones that would matter as friends anyway) will decide to be your friend based on your personality and friendliness, not on whether you practice a specific religion, or none at all.

You can drink in UT. Alcohol is readily available here as in any state. We have bars, liquor stores, restaurants have liquor licenses. Beer can be found in grocery stores, convenience stores, ect. The only issue is our liquor stores are not open on Sunday. So, if that is an issue, just make sure you make a Saturday visit instead

Good luck on your move and new project!
