Yeah, I love those rankings...if you look closely you'll see that those are pull out of thin air...based on what the junior analyts/reporters sitting in a cube in NYC think or have heard of other places. Some even have circular logic (i.e. SA is the fattest city because its people are not active, and they are not active because it's one of the fattest cities) get my point?

Also, wouldn't you say the same about Austin? we are only 1 hr away of each other and both are east of the Hill Country.

Any data on that or just talking out of personal observation? Not saying you can't use your personal experience, just trying to understand how much statistical validity your comment has

Are you offering any stats?

I think the type of items sold in abundance in any outdoor oriented store in SA is sufficient to indicate the more common activities. Those stores do their market research.

REI is for folks who like to sweat doing outdoor activities. Academy is for folks who like to hunt. Big difference.

What? Have you ever been to an REI?

Dick's carries very little in the way of serious outdoor gear such as climbing equipment, backpacking supplies, survival gear, mummy sleeping bags, etc etc. Dick's has recreational gear like multi-person tents, non-backpacking sleeping bags, and a SMALL selection of hiking boots.

Bass Pro has a better, yet limited selection of packs, bags, some rations, and hydration equipment tucked away in the corner upstairs. It still doesn't compare to REI, or even Good Sports at DeZavala and I-10.

Not to mention most of the employees at REI type places are knowledgeable and experienced in hiking, climbing, backpacking, etc. The same can't be said for the average teenager at Dicks, or the average hick at Bass Pro.

I suppose for the average SA resident, those two stores are adequate. For those of us that like to get outdoors and do some real work, they just don't cut it.

There are plenty of people interested in the outdoors in San Antonio. For starters, there are more Boy Scouts in San Antonio than any other Texas City. We have tons of ranches and game reserves surrounding the city too. Not to mention the college and military populations continue to swell here. The selection for outdoor gear at current stores in SA is terrible. We need an REI!

Maybe it's too easy to sweat outdoors most of the year in South Texas? We don't need REI's help for that!

Seriously, the REI stores I've been to up north were the place to go for winter weather gear. If it's an article of clothing that's filled with down or made of wool or fleece, they sell it. And that's just not a niche that needs filling down here.

REI is a fashion store for hipsters yuppies that are wannabe outdoorsmen.
We have REAL outdoorsmen in South Texas.
People on ranches & "game reserves"(I can tell you are not from here)...they dont shop at REI, they wear brands like Carhartt & Wrangler and carry a sidearm, not a overpriced pocket knife. In other words REI doesnt sell what is needed down here.

And the few things they have that are useful...are incredibly overpriced. It is a camping store that uses the starbucks model, of lets overcharge and make the hipsters feel cool to say they shop here.

There is a reason there is not an REI in SA - it is not needed.
And I know Austin is a different story and a world away in culture.

That is true - you can find most REI (except their brand) products cheaper on the Internet.

Exactly why there is not an REI here but Austin, Houston, and Dallas all have one (or more).

We have a Bass Pro, and Cabela's within an hour's drive; both are more geared towards the outdoor activities you find in this area. I've been to a lot of REIs, they're not up to the hype!

I'd be more impressed if we got a Sheels like the one I visited up in Omaha late last year! That dang place has a Ferris wheel inside of it!

Cheers! M2
