I would actually love to hear from the crowd with responses on the "ambiance" issue as well. If anyone is familiar with Kramerbooks in Dupont Circle (DC), it's a good independent bookstore that also has a little bar/coffee place in it. The place is open 24 hours on the weekends and is just great to hang out. Another favorite is The Tattered Cover in LoDo (Denver)... again, great independent style and wonderfully inviting ambiance.

I love Half-Price and Antiquarian on Broadway, but they're not gathering places where you would go hang out with friends or hear readings, etc. The Twig frequently does readings and signings, but the place is a little too cutesy for my taste. Does anyone know of non-chain bookstores that are also "gathering places" in the SA area?

Underground BOOKS 210-223-6292

The calendar looks a little out of date, but it's worth a call.

Oh and look up any of the books by Char Miller for a slightly different take a San Antonio/South Texas history.
