I never knew that. The only version I have ever heard is the Asleep at the Wheel version. Will have to try to find the Marshal Tucker version on youtube.

Thanks for the music satx56. I haven't heard San Antonio Stroll in forever. Tanya's a bit older then me and my parents pretty much just did church music when I came around but I do remember it. I've never heard San Antonio Girl but I loved it! Bob Wills made me laugh and cry because I'd give anything to sit my mother down to watch it. I can just imagine her laughing and telling me about seeing him play here. She was Texas and San Antonio to the core--always teared up talking about the Alamo. I'm trying to teach my kids that but it's so different now days!

You're welcome! I grew up in a musical family. I used to see Tanya Tucker in her early teens at place's like Mendiola's Ballroom near Von Ormy. I'm still looking into possibility of north Texas connection to Bob Wills. Bob wills, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Elvis were all huge when I was a kid. Enjoy!

As mentioned earlier...

And my Dad loved the song San Antonio Rose! Gene Autry did a version of it (it's on the Essential Gene Autry CD which is on my MP3 player) as did Bull Durham and the Heard; but originally it was the signature song of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys...

An interesting factoid, according to Wikipedia it was first an instrumental but lyrics were later added and the song was renamed New San Antonio Rose!

Cheers! M2

Most of these songs, especially the older ones, refer to the city as "San Antone". I didn't grow up here and in the seven years that I've been here I have never heard of a locally grown or transplanted person refer to it as such. Was this just a moniker used in another time, even by locals, or does it just sound better to say "San Antone" in a country song?

I think you answered your own question. "San Antone" exudes "cowboyism". It's what you would expect an Old West cowboy would say. Plus it's harder to make "San Antonio" rhyme with other words in a song.

You're right about the San Antone thing. To be honest I don't really like to hear that although it was always used that way in older songs. I did hear Ty Murray talking about his rodeo belts and winning one in San Antone. It didn't bother me so much on him but maybe that's 'cause he's a real cowboy. Not as many of those around SA as I'd like--at least not my part of town.
