As I recall "San Antone" was probably more common than "San Antonio" back in the 50's and 60's. Or at least equally common.

Here's a rather obscure number. "She's sure enough San Antone" by Shake Russell. I tried to find it on Youtube or an MP3 on his website to no avail. He's got about a half dozen songs on you tube but not this one. How many out there are familiar with Shake Russell and /or have heard this song. I'm just curious.

I think "San Antone" is more commonly used in lyrics (versus "San Antonio") as it's easier to rhyme!

"San Antone" is actually a very common saying among many in SA - kinda like the way different folks pronounce N'awleans....

There's also an old Triumph song called "Little Texas Shaker", that mentions San Antone.

What am I doing hanging round? I should be on the train and gone. I should be riding on that train to San Antone. What am I doing hanging round? Thanks Mike Nesmith where ever you are! Just a loud mouthed yankee I went down to Mexico...

Mike Nesmith did not write What Am I Doing Hangin' Round?, Michael Martin Murphy & Owens "Boomer" Castleman did.

But he certainly sang the heck out of it!

Cheers! M2

Thanks for the correction. Michael Martin Murphey also wrote "Geronomo's Cadillac" if I remember right. It has nothing to do with San Antonio except for the fact that he was held at Fort Sam Houston.

How could anyone forget (kidding) San Antonio being mentioned in the DJ Quick song, "Just Like Compton". While doing a small concert here in the 90's, Quicks entourage and some SA gangsters got into it in the parking lot. Must have been a good exchange of words or guns or both, anyways it was good enough for SA to get its own verse in a song where DJ Quick compairs other cities he has toured in to Compton,CA. I remember the video has shots of the boots at north star mall.

"Now San Antonio......Is Just Like Compton!"

I hate when people say San Antone, my girlfriend in college use to say it just to **** me off. She would also say San Ann, which I hated even more. Then for S&Gs she came up with Sanny Annie...WTF. That drove me up the walls.
