Having moved to SA a few years ago, I too thought HEB had a monopoly. My wife said they were cheaper than from where we came.

I do business with HEB and they are and have been for the last few years, concerned with Wal-Mart coming in to this market at a greater pace. In response they are very prudent in their audit of vendors and their RFQ's.

You have to be careful of the prices at HEB. Here in Corpus Christi, the prices vary from store to store on the same items. Guess they get what money they can based on neighborhood. It is really sad that they can't be more even in their pricing. God, I miss Krogers, Arlan's, Randall's Albertsons. Those were the days. Also, I wish they'd double or triple coupons.

Funny - I was remembering "Double" and "Triple" coupons from back in Houston when we shopped at Krogers. Competitive marketing benefits the consumer, and it was those coupon offers that made the difference. They just don't exist in San Antonio, because they don't have to.

Ya, I miss really coupon shopping. I still have the receipt where I spent a total of 57 cents for 592.31 in groceries. Those were the days.........

I used to do that at Ralph's in San Diego every Sunday. I could never get that good of a deal, but I would have a grocery cart full of food and merchandise and only pay about $10 for it. The total was always right around $100 before the coupons, but those double and triple coupons along with in store specials made for great deals. That really helps keep the grocery budget down too..
If anyone from high up in HEB is reading this.... Hint hint hint

Okay, this is bad. Now I am itching to go coupon shopping. Dang it, lol. Never been to a Ralph's either, hmm. Wonder if you could create a vacation aroung grocery stores, j/k.
I still clip em, and use em, it's just not as much fun. I do take my coupon caddy with me when I travel by car. If I have to get out and stretch my legs, I wait til I see a store. I guess old habits die hard. And as much as I like to save money and eat, it is more fun than necessity these days. Most of the 'great deals' I buy end up at the Food Bank or passed along to a neighbor.
I guess, all in all, I'd rather be addicted to 'couponing' than drugs. It is a lot cheaper.
And........ I second that Hint to the Mucky Mucks at H. E. Butt!

ha ha, yeah, coupon addiction is something I understand. I used to be real bad and would get things I didn't need and sometimes things I had no use for, just because they were free or nearly free.. I did find that adults can eat baby crackers and drink baby juice though..

Ok, that made me laugh!

I had a friend in college who lived off Gerber baby cereal for a while because she got a flat of it at Costco or Sams for basically free. Stuff actually tasted pretty good.

we are in DFW area but grew up around Seguin/San Antonio area and are familiar with HEB--my sister in law lives in Victoria--her take on HEB is that they come into a market, lower their prices until they run every other store out of business, then they jack up the prices because they have cornered the market....
I think that is pretty true--I don't think HEB will come to DFW because there are too many other players--they would have to really do a market saturation or buy out a fairly large chain-- they did not do it when Minyard's went under and I think they missed their chance back then...
