Just heard on KSAT that REI will open in the Huebner Oaks old location of Borders in the fall.

Dick's, Bass Pro, Academy, etc. They've got some competition.

And let's not forget that Sportsmans' Warehouse, very similar, dropped out of the SA market a few years back.

I wish them luck, and I think they'll need it. REI fits nicely in Austin, but not so much in SA...

San Antonio will be a good fit. That side of town especially with all the active college kids.

Actually, there won’t be any competition. REI is for a whole different class of customers. The typical Dick’s, Bass Pro’s, Academy’s customers most likely will not be going to REI. Plus, the people who work at REI are knowledgeable about what they sell.

Love REI. This is great news.

I think it really will draw from a different demographic than the other stores in town, with the possible exception of Whole Earth. And for those who think that REI has awful prices, their store-brand stuff is quite affordable and super high quality. I have a tent from there, a couple of big backpacks, some great sleeping bags, and a few other odds and ends. (The only problem with REI's stuff is that it lasts so long that I hardly ever go back!)
