You could try Enchanted Rock in Fredericksburg, about half an hour from here.

Half an hour??
Where you gonna land the helicopter?

Enchanted rock is about 85 miles away...hour and a half drive without stopping in Fredericksburg for fudge or food. Too hot to go now...wait until October.

I think you meant an hour and a half.

It's lovely, but go really really early in the morning. That said, same is true for most of the trails this time of year.

Government Canyon
Not quite hiking but nice walking - Hardberger Park
Fredrich Wilderness
OP Schnabel (also flat/park but nice walking)
The greenway trails are nice, again, if you're used to mountains, these are flat, but they're nice

Another area are the Alamo Heights Nature Trails, just behind the pool. Lovely trail through the woods. There's also a nice nature trail at UIW, behind the soccer fields.

Hill Country State Natural area (Bandera, TX) has around 40 miles of trails. Primitive & rugged, some difficult. You'll get a good rigorous day of hiking (or overnight backpacking) there. You'll need to be well prepared though and carry plenty of water. There's very little in the way of provision there. Summertime will be brutal here though. Lots of wide open vistas, prairies, and natural woodlands, you'll feel like you've gone back in time.

Lost Maples State Park (Vanderpool, TX) can be beautiful in the fall when the maple trees change color. Some years are better than others and the park does get crowded during the change. You'll need to get there early. It also has rugged, rocky trails over and through canyons that make for an invigorating day hike, or you can primitive backpack here too. There's a lot of tree shade and canyon shadows, and water here, so it's cooler.
