OK, I would like SA to have a mixed of skyscrapers DT. I just can't see a city with the skyline of Shreveport being the 7th largest city in the USA. I would love the mix of the two. Of the four unique cities of America, SA is the only one that has a puny DT.

Having a puny DT didn't affect SA's unique quality, though, did it? Hmmmm...perhaps that is what makes SA unique.

SA new condo downtown is a nice addition to the skyline but we need more. I hope SA gets an IKEA store soon so the outside world just don't think we are all hicks here

Since when does IKEA determine what's "hick" or not?

Even look at the developments in Nashville and Las Vegas cities that are smaller than SA.

I guess I have to get use to SA becoming a suburb of Austin.
I'm no expert by any means, but I personally believe it has to do with Austin having the sprawling UT community; being more diversified; being much more progressive; being the state capital; and a great deal of large companies in my line of work (though not sure which came first on this one)... in that order.

Overall, I like it in Austin very much, relative to San Antonio... but the median home price, I-35, and lack of a VA hospital... not so much.

I've never received the impression that people think of San Antonio as hick. I've heard it referred to as poor and full of illegals but can't say that I've heard the term hick used. Land is being cleared at I-10/1604 for IKEA though construction will not begin until SAWS re-issues permits. This could happen soon as the city is getting closer to working through the endangered bird problem. I really don't think anyone judges a city by the lack of an IKEA. We have numerous condo projects going on downtown, most just happen to be mid-rise at best.

I agree with you except that San Antonio is just a better all around city than Austin. We have many unversities here but Austin seems to be more progressive. Look at the flak I am getting about developing hi rises here

To each his own. I've only been in Austin about a week but so far I like a lot of things much more than San Antonio (and certain things not as much as I've listed) inc. DT.

Regarding universities, nothing in S.A. (e.g. UTSA, Trinity, Immaculate..., ST. Mary's) is of the magnitude that UT is here. It's almost a city of it's own.

As far as Austin being more progressive than S.A., it's not easy to miss actually, as it's literally a night and day difference between the tone/rhetoric here as opposed to San Anton. Again, I think that has a lot to do with the breadth U.T. which runs in tandem with the hip culture scene here along with a higher level of diversity which in turn provides a more well rounded experience I think.

As far as all-around, that's a tough call for me, but I'd probably choose Austin.

I don't like San Anton's skyline or DT atmosphere either but nothing wrong with folks that do. I just prefer a new metropolitan feel over old and historical.
