Agree that it's all perspective, but I strongly disagree the lack of high-rise buildings a sign of lack of character and dullness. IMO, the city with insurmountable character based on architecture alone is Rome. There aren't many high rises there and surely none taller than what we have in San Antonio.

I would hate to see what would happen to our Riverwalk if it is surrounded by dense McSkyscraper development in yet another McDowntown.

2nd Tuesday of next week. Is that a better answer?
Is this before or after a casino/hotel built on the Riverwalk?

Never been to Rome so I can't say much about it. But as a fan of clean, modern architecture the current downtown has a lot of "McDowntown" feel to it.

Building modern doesn't necessarily mean razing things that are there. There are enough undeveloped areas (usually surface parking lots) and structures that are beyond economic repair and would just be salvaged later to build on.

Yawn. Yawn. How many times has this been discussed? It's as if developers sink $50-$100m into a project because it is "cool" and currently there is a need for more "cool". It is demand that drives these projects and there is (generally) no need for (a significant number of) these projects in this city, for a variety of reasons (diversified economy, lots of land, more poor people than Austin, wherever), that's why it doesn't happen. Don't fight it, embrace it!

I fail to see how the average height of a city's buildings contributes much to its residents or visitors, and from my experience, skyscrapers are much cooler from a distance and lose most of their appeal the closer you get. (Try walking through downtown Calgary on the one sunny day of the winter where the shade from the buildings drops the temperature another 10 degrees) If it's a cool view you want, there is plenty of existing commercial and residential space available downtown, go for it.

But, he said outright, "go ahead, shoot me..."

so go ahead, git on over there where he lives and SHOOT him!!

Hide out in the bushes or whatever lining his driveway, and as he backs out, his head facing the back end of the car, shoot him right dead center in the back of his head....

I believe in always trying to give people exactly what they ask for.....
