Regarding universities, nothing in S.A. (e.g. UTSA, Trinity, Immaculate..., ST. Mary's) is of the magnitude that UT is here. It's almost a city of it's own.

As far as Austin being more progressive than S.A., it's not easy to miss actually, as it's literally a night and day difference between the tone/rhetoric here as opposed to San Anton. Again, I think that has a lot to do with the breadth U.T. which runs in tandem with the hip culture scene here along with a higher level of diversity which in turn provides a more well rounded experience I think.

As far as all-around, that's a tough call for me, but I'd probably choose Austin.

I don't like San Anton's skyline or DT atmosphere either but nothing wrong with folks that do. I just prefer a new metropolitan feel over old and historical.
UT defines the hip culture scene and it is a city of it's own. Geez...when I was there eons ago there were 45,000 PLUS students. MANY of those students stay in Austin despite the tough competition in the job market. It's hard to leave Austin once it's in your blod. Most cities that are dominated by a huge university and a the state capital tend to be more progressive. We're lucky to have Austin within a short drive. Then we can leave and come back to catch our breath. Austin is awesome...no doubt....just a whole different animal. The traffic is definitely worse than SA....and cost of living a bit higher....and maybe more trendy and cosmo architecture...and yes skyscrapers ()....but lots of great renovations and salvaged old stately homes too.

Personally...I don't care what kind of acclaim it's gotten, but I am NOT a fan of the lotus blossom scraper downtown.

That's one thing to consider.....if SA were to get more towering edifices, we may not like what we get!

Charlotte has a vibrant DT also but has an awesome skyline to boot. Austin is really getting a nice skyline too along with condos. Where is SA in the mix. Where is the light rail. If there was ever a city that needed light rail SA would be the city, since it is so spread out

You might be thinking of commuter rail. Commuter rail brings people into a city from the suburbs and outlying towns. Light rail is an inner city form of public transportation. Light rail can only succeed in very dense areas.

Right after Disneyland. Which is directly following Trader Joe's, In n Out, and Ikea.

2nd Tuesday of next week. Is that a better answer?

Great another skyscraper thread by imaterry. Could the mods merge it with one of the others?

How can you introduce this forum to a cultural delight such as Porky J's one second, then lament about the lack of ugly high-rise buildings that would ruin the landscape of this beautiful city the next?

Cities that build these monstrosities are trying to make up for a lack of character, something San Antonio has been blessed with plenty.

Keep the San Antonio skyline unique, it doesn't need more metal and concrete to define it!

If this is a troll, I give it a "D." Fuel for the fire - I see the current lack of high-rise buildings to be a lack of character and boring.

It's all perspective...
