WHY would you use a dedicated HOV lane during non-peak hours when there are 3 other lanes to use? Taxpayer or not. If that was the case, I could ask why should I pay a “school tax” when I have no kids in school?

Some states actual have rules that state the HOV lane is only designated as such during certain hours of the day and all other hours maybe used by anyone. So far San Antonio doesn’t have that rule. It is HOV 24/7.

Is the new HOV lane separated by a barrier with exits or is it just double line with lines indicating the "exits" that anyone can simply ignore and drive over?

All explained here:

The San Antonio Area Freeway System - HOV lanes.

Now imagine driving into SA from the West at night real tired after being on the road for 10-12 hours, it sucked. LOL

Glad to see that project is finally coming to a close and that its coming with an HOV lane.

The section from 1604 to Ralph Fair Road is complete, and is now 4 lanes in both directions for the entire length of the project area. 3 general purpose lanes, and 1 HOV lane in each direction.

The current construction efforts on I-10 on the NW side are between Fair Oaks Parkway and SH-46 in Boerne. This project involves reconfiguring (relocating, lengthening, and straightening) entrance and exit ramps, reconfiguring intersections (adding left hand turn-around lanes), and converting the frontage roads to one way. The 87/South Main exit in Boerne will become accessible in both directions, and full length frontage roads will be included for the length of the project area.

Once that project is complete, I-10 will be expanded to 4 lanes (3 GP, 1 HOV) in both directions from the current terminus just north/west of Ralph Fair Rd all the way to SH-46 in Boerne.

BS.

The area I was on, it was two lanes plus HOV. And if there was an accident or construction in the primary lanes in an off-peak time then there should be no reason I couldn't use the HOV lane.

If DC or Philly regions can designate their use is OK during off-peak, then why can't we here?

This is typical SA way of thinking....smh

What area are you talking about (with only 2 additional lanes)? And I don’t make the laws, I just abide by them. You need to ask the local NTSB. And of course the HOV lane should be utilized during an accident or construction (like last Saturday), I am speaking in general terms. I don't care to list all the the "what ifs" because that would be monotonous.

FWIW the FAQ section on the project seemed to be prepared for a list of arguments on the matter, it made me grin alittle. .. On a side note, on paper - I gotta admit SATX seems to be doing pretty well on road improvements, especially given they are all non-tolled projects. I'm kind of jealous.

Using school tax is a bad comparison. We all use the roads either as a driver or rider. Not all of us have children.

We will see how long the 24/7 enforcement lasts and hopefully the police don't use it as an excuse to pull you over one late night as you go down HOV.

"I pulled you over because I thought you didn't have a passenger."

I would hope the police would have visual proof, and if so, that goes back to my original comment on there is absolutely no reason to drive in the HOV lane without a passenger (late at night with no traffic). Driving in that lane alone is just someone with complete disregard for laws/rules. I don't care if your "tax dollars" paid for it or not. I don't think it would be wise to argue this point with the police issuing the ticket.
