Hi there;

Well, I'm a quasi-pagan, liberal/socialist leaning, autodidact white lesbian living in a majority-Hispanic, old-school Catholic SA neighborhood... I live with my Hispanic/Native American partner and children (hers and mine). I do understand why you ask what you ask here, and I'll attempt to offer my insight.

I have not encountered any personal flak for not being Catholic or Christian. We did have a snooty old lady come to the house the first month we lived here, pushing us to join her church and getting her feathers ruffled when we told her we don't attend. Just one though and she was here looking for the previous owners (who were very active in their church).

The kids have had some shocked reactions at school when they expressed their beliefs (or lack thereof)... no ostracism or anything but most of their friends are Catholic and cannot understand why they are not. They still have friends though. It's nothing like it was growing up where I grew up (further South Texas, small town) with a heavy Southern Baptist population... in my experience people there were very in your face and judgmental. Not so here. Overall it seems to be very "live and let live". We have not noticed any negativity in our neighborhood or around town really at all.

Others are correct on the political climate here. You'll find pockets of town that are largely politically conservative, and other pockets that are the opposite.

I'm sure others are going to disagree, but from my view, San Antonio's GLBT population is spread out throughout the city and IMO, not very cohesive. I don't see a lot of unity in the community but that's just one person's opinion. I do know that our GLBT community center couldn't stay open due to lack of funds, and "our" events seem to have low turnout compared to other cities of similar size and similar GLBT populaton.

SA has a very large number of GLBT families with kids, yet there's no active COLAGE chapter (I keep saying I'd like to start one though!) and the attempts at forming social groups seem to fizzle. In short, I keep reading about these folks but haven't found them yet aside from a few small clusters of people who get together via the Metropolitan Community Church and such. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places? It's entirely possible.

There do seem to be more social groups and such geared towards single lesbians or lesbian couples without kids. I'm sure you'll find the city overall to be comfortable and pleasant.. sometimes it's just about finding your "clan". For years I cursed and railed about this city (I've been here since Jr. High), then years later, via my son's school, I met many SA residents who changed my opinion and I discovered another "world" beyond what I'd seen up to that point. I had the impression that SA was just about basketball and suburbia and it was a misleading impression.

Pretty much now the only thing really bugging me about SA is the weather, and the stray dogs!

I would not worry. You will fit right in.
Welcome to Paradise.
That was perfect.

If you like the art scene - even BETTER but I agree with a lot of what's been said (positively). We are predominantly hispanic (except for some of the really OOOOOLLLD religious hispanics (in my family. . haha! we ignore them!) but very accepting. We belong to a Catholic church with a large lesbian following believe it or not. Not everyone is extremely open about their preferences (as should be their choice) but I think we're finally getting to a point where everyone just accepts everyone no matter what their opinion is on any one stance be it sexual preference or whether or not you're a flippin animal lover. It's about damn time too. You'll find your opinionated and extremists wherever you go and they're best ignored here like they are everywhere else.

I'm more worried about the "tools" across the street devaluing my property than I am about whether or not someone else follows MY personal beliefs.
I know a lot of people who feel the SAME way. You'd like it here. I definitely think you'd like it.

Interesting! From the outside looking in, it seems like such a cohesive community. Every time I meet a new person who's GL or B, they already seem to know all my other GLB friends, or at least know of them. I guess that's more due to the small town atmosphere than the community itself. There seem to be a lot of events, but that may be a misperception.

And HICKS and Mexicans and Germans and thugs and BAD LANDLORDS. . . OMG, sorry. . . I'm making this about MY problems.

My bad.

J/K - I do agree with having a sense of humor when it comes to people with prejudices or stuffy opinions (hey, I have a few of my own and I can deal with people having them towards me as well!) but i know that's not what this thread was about. I hope that by seeing our sense of humor regarding those who are less accepting in general, though, you can see what a lax attitude and large acceptance you'll encounter here for the most part.

I had to chuckle at the title for this thread. NOT because I'm discriminating, but because that's about the highest number of adjectives I've seen for a personal description!
