When I travelled for business and I was going to be in town for more than one day, one of the things I always enjoyed doing was visiting some of the local malls. Malls always seem like a nice, clean, safe place to spend some time. You can usually tell how nice an area is by their local mall.

So my question for the group is: If someone were to come to SA to visit, what three to five malls would you recommend someone to check out? (The only reason I said three to five instead of just one is because looking at an old atlas I have it seems that there are quite a few malls in SA.)

Downtown, rivercenter is the only game. It's more tourist oriented, but offers a Macy's and Dillard's. North Star Mall is the mall for those in the north central area, and for 09ers. It features a Flagship Dillard's, Flagship Macy's and a Saks Fifth Avenue, along with specialty shops. On the far northwest side the Shops at La Cantera at 1604 & I-10 is San Antonio's newest "mall" It features Dillard's and Macy's ( though the stores there aren't as big or nice as North Star's) and San Antonio's only nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. Smaller stores include Ralph Lauren and La Coste. On the Northeast side Rolling Oaks is the only game left. It's stores aren't as nice as the previous malls and the shoppers here tend to be quite cheap and trashy. The vacancy rate is much higher than north star or La Cantera. On the south side South Park Mall is the only mall. It has a smaller but newish Macy's and JCPenney.

1. Rivercenter. Downtown on the riverwalk. Indoors but branching out into the outdoors. Very scenic and probably the best part of the Riverwalk.

2. North Star Mall - Indoors. Legendary.

3. La Cantera - Outdoors. Picture a large, one story, indoor mall - only without a roof.

As for the other 3 mentioned above, Rolling Oaks is a pretty standard indoor mall. The Forum and Huebner Oaks are not really malls but big outdoor strip centers, while good for shopping, not much to see otherwise.

Nobody mentioned the Quarry, did they? Not a mall, but pretty fun to shop there!
