Should there ever be a larger airport built outside the city, SAIA would fall right in line with Dallas Love and Houston Hobby as a secondary airport within the city.

My guess is almost same as others...good points....to far in the interior US and too far south....Houston and Dallas already have hubs for airlines...another possibility is SA's airport couldnt accomidate witch ever airline would like to have a hub here....we would need to have another 20-35 gates...(IMHO) that means another terminal...better than #2 and more parking with more finacial ties to the rest of the country and world to have that much air traffic to support a hub.

1) Location (out of the way)
2) It's metropolitan statistical area is quite small. Only has 1.9 million people. This generates very little O/D (origin/destination) traffic.
3) This is in comparison to DFW's 6 milllion plus and Houston's 5.5 million people Both Houston and DFW account for a combined 40+ corporate headquarters. DFW alone has one of the highest concentration of corporate headquarters in the US.
4) Demographics: DFW and HOuston are both wealthier cities than San Antonio. DFW has the 3rd highest concentration of billionaires in the country and highest concentration of millionaires. These are the people that can afford to fly and create more O/D traffic.
5) San Antonio Int'l simply doesnt have the facilities to accomodate a large airline hub. Though the market probably doesnt warrant a major hub there. United tried to do a Hublet or focus city there last year and found it very unprofitable.

Hope this answers your question

FYI: Port San Antonio (formerly Kelly USA...formerly Kelly AFB) is trying to cash in on the commercial cargo aspect of having a hub for Latin America. Maybe, they could dual-source for tourist traffic from that area as well?

This is what they are working on. The past studies on making SA a HUB or an entry point from South America is in and we will be opening the airport up to be an international hub pretty soon.

It will be hard with no feeder traffic. The fact remains American's largest hub is at DFW int'l, the 3rd largest airport in the world. Continental's largest hub is at Houston, and Continental is America's 4th largest carrier.
Int'l carriers have relied on code sharing alliances with our American carriers to feed traffic. Thus, it will be hard to attract a major international hub to San Antonio. San Antonio does not have enough O/D traffic to support a major international hub, it doesnt even have enough to support a domestic hub, as evidenced by United's failure last year.

To compete with San Antonio for S. America are DFW, Houston, and Miami. And now with the new 787 dreamliner due out next year, Atlanta, Chicago, NYC, DC are joining the mix. THese are all part of America's major metropolitan areas. San Antonio belongs to the tier of KC, Milwaukee Metro, Indianapolis. These cities may serve as focus cities for major carriers, but will likely never achieve hub status even domestically.

Only exceptions to the rule are Northwest's Memphis hub, Delta's Salt Lake City hub and Cincinatti Hub. All other major carriers are hubbed in cities greater than 2.5 million in their metros.

Unfortuantely for San Antonio, it competes against DFW (6.2 million people, 2nd largest airport in US, 3rd busiest in US, 6th busiest in world) and Houston Intercontinental (major international gateway, and one of US's busiest).
