Wide streets with frontage roads

Lane and street width wider than CA state standards, consistent with Arizona and Nevada and many other LDS run cities in California

Large blocks in the city of Zion plan like Salt Lake City

Stop lights minimum of approx. 1200 feet apart, minimum, speeds 55mph

Sign ordinance

Dark skies

Mormon business interests contribute to community philanthropy, including helping the gay community

Ban on neon signs and billboards, except on tribal land

All of the above Mormon city planning principles create the unique low density, spread out city with incredible views of the mountains.

Many people enjoy how quiet and dark the mid century neighborhoods are at night.

Totally different than west Hollywood.

Sorry can't mention specific people here but I admire how the city still exists as a mini Salt Lake City in the desert.

And, I hope it will never change

Riverside County wide streets as required by the county, link.

Some cities that are non LDS such as cathedral city do not meet these standards.

Cat city does not have a sign ordinance or ban neon signs. Neither does thousand palms.

Scroll up a page at this link to see the 660 foot minimum between intersections. It is Carlsbad, also run by the LDS, that is 1200 minimum in most areas.

Riverside County Integrated Project

This is from Joseph Smith who designed blocks 660 feet in the original city of Zion plan,

http://urbanplanning.library.cornell.edu/DOCS/smith.htm

Riverside County is run by the LDS. The wide streets will serve to provide efficient transportation and reduce congestion. Also bike and skateboard friendly.

Hi,

ran across this forum, and actually that poster is correct, palm springs along with phoenix, vegas, and salt lake city are all to one extent or another laid out in a pattern of large blocks with wide streets, dark skies, sign ordinance, adobe block style architecture that is mislabeled as mid-century modern, like the stater bros in north palm springs next to the desert HIV project. palm springs and bullhead city have essentially the same architecture.

riverside county is indeed planned just about the same way in most of its cities, wide streets, stop lights at great distances, businesses are clustered at major intersections.

For the OP: whether the mormons still run palm springs with the recent city council elections, I don't know, although, there's a huge population of mormons in the I.E. especially the coachella valley. they would hold many adminastrative posts within palm springs and the other desert cities and riverside co. in general give the county's history.

riverside county is LDS from the top down, different cities would have varying degrees of city council LDS representation and different percentages of LDS. dark skies required in all of riverside county, failure to comply is a huge fine, a second violation is JAIL TIME in one of Marion Ashley's new jails

also a very large christian fundamentalist, 7th day adventist, presence in the coachella valley and riverside county in general, loma linda hospital is in nearby san bernardino county they are 7th day adventists

is the giant cross in Murrieta in Greer Ranch from the 7th day adventists, or the fundamentalists ???? never looked into that.

kinda interesting when you think of it that there's a huge gay community in such a republican county. north san diego county esp. carlsbad has significant LDS influences on planning and architecture.

we could continue with Sen. Jeff Stone's (R-Temecula) gold scientology ring and their headquarters in Hemet but I'll stop there ................ :-)
Architecture and our world is a more interesting and diverse place WITH religions, than without. I study architecture. If we didn't have religions, it would be a very boring field to study !!!

Wow. That is very interesting. I always wondered why the streets were so wide in Palm Springs. How about Temecula? That was along the old 395, Mormon Batallion.

Arch98 and Tolerance999 are banned now so don't expect an answer. Your posts sound similar in nature to those two nut jobs!
