I will possibly be moving to the San Diego area and working north of the city just off I-5, south of Del Mar. Since I have only visited the area on vacation I have no idea where to move. I am married with no kids (but planning on raising a family) and my wife and I would like to move into a home in a nice neighborhood. Mira Mesa seems like it's very affordable, but it gets a bad rep from several people on these forums. What areas would be good for us?

Thanks

Ry

A lot depends on what you can afford. As far as Mira Mesa goes, there are some nice parts on the west side (for example, the area technically called "Sorrento Mesa") which would be close to your work.
Carmel Valley is very close, and, if you can afford it (I can't!) Del Mar is right on the ocean. Then you have a bunch of towns north of Del Mar (Encinitas, Cardiff...) with family-oriented areas, but again, pricey. Along the coast, there's a price difference between "east of 5" and "west of 5" to keep in mind.

Carmel Valley is the logical choice. You could also check out areas like University City or Clairmont which are reasonable and decent, or if you want something a little nicer 4S or Rancho Penasquitos are also not too far.

As far as Mira Mesa, I would only move there if I were Filipino
