How far is too far to commute into San Diego (around the zoo/sea world/museums area)? We like the looks of San Elijo Hills, but don't know the traffic patterns, perhaps this would be a nightmare commute... If that's horrible, what communities would you recommend (houses/townhomes around 300,000, safe, good schools, somewhat family oriented)

Thanks!

What kind of commute can you tolerate. For years I commuted from Poway/Rancho Bernardo to just east of downtown. Wasn't thrilled but managed to do it. I know someone whose daily commute takes them from Temecula to Mission Valley. I don't know how they stand it but they do. Right now I have an 8 mile commute on a frwy that is not as heavily trafficked as many. One happy camper here.

San Elijo Hills to about anywhere is going to be 45 minutes or more. General rule of thumb is once you get north of the 56 corridor you tend to get into the painful commutes. Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido probably have it the worst. Similar story south of 94 freeway i.e. eastern Chula Vista.

Very helpful. I am also concerned about commute times. I currently have a 10 minute commute in Knoxville TN (I don't expect that when I move out to SD) but previously in Downtown Nashville, TN my commute was 25 minutes with no traffic and 45 with heavy traffic. How far away from northern La Jolla can I go and have about a 30 minute commute?

AS far as homes/townhomes, you can find many of these HOA designed neighborhoods scattered all throughout Carlsbad as well as south in Chula Vista/Otay Ranch.

This map was a very good tool for me in helping me find my house. It can also give you an aerial view of the neighborhoods and zip codes. The forums are helpful too once you get past some of the forum bickering.

I could probably tolerate 30-45 minutes. How far North from San Diego could that get me for a commute?

Another question, is there any decent public transportation going into the city?
