You might try Rolando Park, a little neighborhood of San Diego on the border of both La Mesa and Lemon Grove. The homes were built in the 1950s. I can vouch for the safe feel. Can't vouch for the schools. The principal seems like a really nice woman who cares, but the school itself seems shabby to me (what I have seen of it). My children are adults and they graduated from Poway schools so I can't comment on other schools, but Rolando Park is modestly priced at this time, safe and we have found it to be very friendly.

Can anyone tell me what neighborhood this home would be in, and whether or not it's safe-ish?

It's in National City, near Chula Vista. The commute on I-5 would be horrible either way.

No, it's not National City, it's Otay Mesa. I'm not familiar with that area, but I think that it's mostly a middle class hispanic neighborhood with close connections to Tijuana. It should be safe, but it's pretty far from Mission Valley. This seems to be the local elementary school:

Sweetwater is the high school district, and Chula Vista is the elementary school district.

Gangs of all races kill, intimidate, and harm people.

White supremacy is a belief.....and typically is limited to freedom of expression. I'd rather have someone believe something and not act on it, than have people kill at random.

My street has a family of every ethnicity/race and we all get along pretty well. The Chinese family is pretty unfriendly though lol. San Diegans are laid back in general. Less racial tensions than most parts of the country IMHO. People of different races & backgrounds are more integrated here. The Bay Area & Los Angeles are still highly segregated compared to San Diego.

I am 23 years old, living in Denver and want to move to San Diego in the next month. I'm applying at various country clubs for grounds maintenance and other miscellaneous jobs, and need dog friendly housing in a good and safe neighborhood. My hope is to find a studio or one bedroom under $900. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. PGA

It will be very difficult to find a studio or 1-bedroom under $900. The median rate for a 1-bedroom is around $1400. A studio may be possible but that's still very very low. Unfortunately needing a place that allows pets will further narrow your options. Many people survive out here by having roommates. Check out rental prices on Craigslist to see what the market is like.

You also really need to find out where you'll be working first before you sign a lease. Otherwise you could be in for a very long commute.
