I have a question, I was thinking about visiting San Diego sometime next year. What part of the city is the safest to stay in Carlsbad,Caronado,Del Mar/ Rancho Santa Fe, Downtown, East County, Escondido, Kearny Mesa/ Miramar, La Jolla, Mission Bay/ beaches, Mission Valley, North inland, oceanside, Old Town, Point Loma/ Harbor Island/ Shelter Island, Rancho barnardo/ carmel Mountain, South Bay or Uptown?

All of these below I would consider safe. Here is how I would rank them in terms of safety. This my somewhat educated, but not fully educated, opinion.

Rancho Bernardo
Carlsbad
Coronado
Mission Valley
North Inland
Del Mar

They're all safe. I'd have put Del Mar first or second on that list, for safety, but maybe there's something I don't know about it.

But if you're visiting, I wouldn't stay in Rancho Bernardo or North Inland, or even Mission Valley. They're not close to a lot of the things people seem to want to see. The other neighborhoods are at the coast, and are more likely candidates.

If cost is not an issue, I'd go with Del Mar. It's near the beach, there's train service into San Diego (is there a stop at Del Mar? That I don't know). And it's a pretty town with a 'high street' all its own.

The train hasn't stopped in Del Mar for almost 20 years now. Amtrak and Coaster stops a few miles north in Solana Beach. The Del Martians didn't want the trains stopping their precious car traffic along the coastal route.

True! To the OP, if Del Mar's being a bit full of itself puts you off, then consider staying in Solana Beach. Solana Beach has it's own charm, as well as a train station.

Mission Valley would be a great stay for a vacation.

It is near everything. Zoo, beach, Sea World, Downtown.

Mission Valley is set up for visitors with Hotel Circle.

I suggest the Sheraton in Mission Valley for good value.

San Diego is pretty safe, it's not like you are coming to LA or Detroit or East St Louis. If you are coming for a vacation, stay near the coast, stay near the vacation-y areas like Mission Valley and Hotel Circle, keep your wits about you and you will be fine. I wouldn't stay inland if you are coming for a vacation, that would be like condemning yourself to your car for your entire trip.

Give me your advice.... may sound silly to some of you, butt...
Which beaches are the best for sand dollars & different sea shells. Planning a visit to SD with friends & some of them never being in CA. They love seashells. They can't wait to walk the beaches.
thanks.

I've never had any problems downtown, and I've wandered the streets late at night in pretty poor condition if you know what I mean. If you're visiting, I'd recommend staying here. It's near everything, and you can wander outside your hotel and there are literally hundreds of places looking to provide you with something to do.
