I didn't know it was a Chicago station until I randomly saw their news. Then they had a bulls game.

So yeah this just made me curious. I googled it but couldn't find anything. Anyone know why a chicago tv channel is in San Diego?

WGN is a lot wider than just Chicago. It serves the entire midwest. My guess as to why it's here is that there are enough midwest ex-pats to make it a good sell for the cable companies.

Serves the nation on cable.

In the old days when cable was new there still wasn't that many channels. It was cool to get WGN to watch the Cubs and TBN to watch the Braves.

Before we got cable in the early to mid 80's in Fresno we had 7 channels, PBS, CBS, ABC, NBC, spanish 21 (now Univision I think), 26 (good for MASH reruns, local news and Giants baseball) and 53 (independent).

Moving up to cable and getting MTV and baseball was great. Then CNN came into being and we had 24 hour news.

I'm not sure if we have WGN here now on our Cable, I know we had it in Rancho Cordova.

WGN has long been a national cable inhabitant. Along with TBS in Atlanta and KTLA in Los Angeles, it was called a "superstation" when cable was gaining popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. I remember when my family got cable in about 1982 in Los Angeles, the lineup included TBS and WGN; KTLA was a local station for us, of course, but I know that towards the late 1990s (I think), I found out that people outside California were getting KTLA as a superstation.

WGN never really seemed to have much that I wanted to watch -- TBS had more. It could be that you just never really noticed it before because you didn't stop to watch any of its programming.

(By the way, I haven't had cable for years, so I have no idea if the term "superstation" is even still used. If it is, disregard the quote marks, obviously.)

Yep. I've lived all over the place, and WGN was always on TV. It was awesome when I was a kid because I could watch every Bulls game (back when Jordan was still playing).

It's fun to flip to it and see how bad they are either:

A. Freezing
B. Broiling

I remember In the early days of WTBS ( now just TBS) being a Superstation, you would see local commercials for car dealers, etc. in Atlanta even if you were watching in California. That was before cable companies figured out they could negotiate to keep part of the commercial inventory and sell ad time themselves.

But then my mom calls me every spring during "May Gray" to rag on me that they have better weather than we do.

I've lived in various cities and I always remember getting WGN. Even when I was a young kid. I remember watching those Empire Carpet Cleaning commercials with that catchy "588-2300 Empire" all the time.

Chicago has always been a big feeder city to San Diego. I have several friends from Chicago that have moved here and just met a lot throughout my lifetime. Go to the game when the Cubs are in town and you will find a lot of ex-Chicagoans (sp?).

There is a lot of them around the South Park area and the 30th street corridor.
