Hi All, we will be moving to SD in 2 months.
We saw a home we really love in Cortez Hill but we have a child that will be going to K next year. I did a greatschools check and it seems the Cortez Hill public is very bad ( 3/10). Any advice on ( non religious) private schools that wont break the bank?
Many thanks!!!

I don't know of any private schools in the Cortez Hill area. But it is in the San Diego Unified School District / Welcome district. Once you have an address you'll be able to go into Enrollment Options and see what elementary school you'll be able to enroll your child in. Just be advised that the classes are very large.

There is no public school district in Cortez Hill. Cortez Hill is part of San Diego Unified - San Diego Unified School District / Welcome. Cortez Hill is a neighborhood, not a city.

If you don't like your neighborhood school, you can fill out and submit a CHOICE application for another school, but it's not a guarantee. It depends on space availability, and there are also a lot of kindergartners starting school every year.

You should look at and visit Albert Einstein Academy Charter School in South Park. It's a very good school and is an IB Language Immersion program; the languages being German and Spanish.

Check out the SDUSD magnet programs and the public charter schools, both of which are free. You may have missed the deadline for the charter school lotteries for next year-there may be a few with spots left. There may be deadlines for open enrollment and magnet options, too.
Urban Discovery charter Academy is on 6th, I believe, near Balboa Park. Not too far from Cortez Hill.
Albert Einstein dual language immersion German/English is in Golden Hill, also nearby. I think their program has IB, as well. [???]
You could also check out Alice Birney k-8 in University Heights-it transitioned several years ago to IB program [International Baccalaureate].
Typically, parents living in the central SD schools do the charter or magnet school route and drive their kids. Or, they open enroll in a better neighborhood school in SD. [I think magnets, as city district programs, still provide transport. Charters are stated funded and operate outside the bounds of the city bureaucracy and do not provide transport.] You can also look into open enrollment to one of the better SD city schools.

Most of the private schools will break the bank...except for the Catholic ones. I know parents who have sent their kids to catholic and are not practicing catholics themselves, in fact.
Other parents have found that the lower grades k-3 or so, were okay for their kids even at 'poor performing schools'. You'll want to check out the social climate of the school as far as that goes; the ranking on great schools is test performance.

Any school out of their neighborhood will depend on space availability in that particular grade.
