Right now those Cities are all over 100 degrees every day and it's only June. If you are tempted to live out there you may as well pick AZ or Nevada because it's much cheaper.

A couple of places come to mind for me that you might be able to do.

Lake Elsinore
Murrieta
Temecula
Menifee

Go on Trulia and search rentals in those areas. You could rent a 3 bedroom for around 1300 to 1500 a month. That would put you at 3 times your monthly housing cost which is the ideal when you budget for 5,000 a month. The purchase price on these homes is lower as well.
Since you are homeschooling that will save on your childrens clothing, lunches, etc. I imagine you'll do most of your cooking at home which will also save you money. If you don't have any large outstanding debt you should be just fine.

These cities are nice, safe areas and you can take weekend trips to the beach with in an hour giving traffic consideration. On a good day you could make it to Carlsbad in 40 min.

A bonus is there are plenty of homeschoolers in this area.

But much further for a beach vacation and there are closer cities which offer the same cost of living as those cities an hour from SD. Most of the people in those I've mention only make 50,000 to 100,000 a year and do ok.

Just returned from San Diego. You could possibly afford to live on a boat. The boat slips are starting at $900 a month. I would suggest you talk to a realtor...my understanding is that it is hard to find apartments there,,,in decent areas,,,for under $2,000 a month. six kids and you will find yourself on food stamps. But then CA is a free for all right now so go ahead and jump in.

there was a little apartment quad on Scott Street and the 1 bed 1 bath until is on the market for $209,000. We were tempted to buy it for a weekend get out of the heat. Taxes are high there....

I would live in Yuma if we wanted or had to be closer to San Diego.

They are a family of six. Plus, the OP said San Diego and usually people are talking about the part of SD that is what we are known for not desert heat. Someone from MN would have a hard time adjusting to 3-4 or even 5 months of possible 100+ heat.

The high today in Temecula is 95. Guess what the high is in Yuma or PHX?

Also consider that electric rates are very high, and to have a bunch of people home all day will put you into "peak hours" when the rates are the highest.
Not to mention water rates, which are skyrocketing all over SoCal.

They do it in Phoenix all the time and it's a lot hotter. There are tons of people just like the OP in Temecula and some of them commute to SD proper everyday. 100 degrees with little humidity will be paradise to them compared to MN.
And the winters will be fantastic. The wine country up there is nice, and they can beach it on the weekends.
