No...two different towns/cities. Oceanside is North County.

Good idea. What neighborhoods are 1-2 miles from the beach? Would that be Mission bay?

I live a mile from the beach in Cardiff. Id just look at any of the north county neighborhoods a little east of the 5 and you will be in that range

I guess if I were on a budget and wanted to be near the beach, the first place I'd look would be Ocean Beach. You might be able to find a small one bedroom or studio there for around $1200. Ideally, though, Mission Beach or Pacific Beach would be better, but will likely cost you a bit more. I'm thinking more along the lines of $1500. Utilities are extra, but since you're at the beach there's usually no air conditioning, so the electric bill isn't much.

It's too bad things are so expensive these days. I've lived all over the beach areas. South Mission Beach twice, Pacific Beach twice. Once in Ocean Beach. Once in Del Mar. Hillcrest one time, but that's not the beach. All things considered, I think it's worth it. It's nice to lay in bed at night and hear the waves. It's nice to get up in the morning and have a run on the boardwalk. And if you need something to do, going to the beach and hanging out is free. You might end up buying a few beers and some fish tacos, but that's up to you.

Everyone should live at the beach a few years. I got tired of it fast but it was fun when I was younger. Unless I had megabucks to live up the hill in Del Mar, it's just not worth it, too many people crammed into shacks, too many tourists, druggies, partiers and bums, no parking, etc.

And one other thing. If'er you're looking for a new apartment with amenities, that's probably not going to happen at the beach for $1200. I'd say forget the amenities. It's not like there aren't laundromats around.

If you are moving here for the beaches, then by all means, live there. I think it's possible to live near the beach for the $1200 a month but don't expect it to be anything fancy. You may have to drive around the neighborhoods you are interested in and look for "For Rent" signs in the window.
