Hi all!

My husband and I are planning on moving to San Diego next summer. We'd appreciate any suggestions on where to live-somewhere that would fit our lifestyle and budget. We're both in our mid 20's, no kids or pets. We're an active couple that enjoys the outdoors, hiking, the beach, beer, and good eats. My husband is in the beverage (beer) distribution industry and I am an elementary school teacher. As of now, we have a combined salary of 100k. We don't have any jobs lined up for us just yet. So our salary may change depending on what opportunities we can secure. We want to rent a place somewhere in the price range of $1400-$1600 for a 1-2 bedroom. We'll be visiting in March and would like suggestions on which neighborhoods to explore. We're pretty open to anything. We just want to be mindful of the crime rate and affordability of an area.

We appreciate any comments/suggestions!

You may have already seen this thread, but it is a good starting point for anyone moving to San Diego. In it, locals describe the San Diego Count neighborhoods where they live, including pros and cons:

What do you like about where you live in SD County?

Bear in mind that the median rent for a one bedroom apartment in San Diego County is currently running $1500 a month. Read the thread, determine which areas sound like what you are looking for, then use a site like Zillow.com to search for apartments in your budget range within a reasonable commuting distance from where you both will be working .

Good luck with your move!

If your coming without jobs, make sure you have enough money to cover at least six months of expenses.

At least Oahu is far from the cheapest place in the USA, so general cost of living in San Diego should be in the neighborhood of what the OP is used to, and some items should be cheaper on the mainland.

Good luck. Living in Oahu you may find SD a cheaper place to live. I lived in Honolulu back in the mid 90's and my daughter went to Hawaii Pacific University. Sometimes I wished I had stayed. Could never afford to go back now.

Thank you! We've been looking at Lemon Grove, La Mesa, and North Park.. but we're still researching. We've also used zillow.com to search for apartments. Great resource

North County also has a sizable Pacific Islander community, especially Oceanside. But if you did decide on Oceanside, perhaps move a bit more inland, where there's a bit less crime/sketch feel.
