Oceanside could also be an option if you don’t mind being farther from central SD. Oceanside has stops for the Sprinter train, Coaster, Metrolink, and Amtrak.

I ride the trolley to work almost every day during rush hour from East County to Old Town on the Green line. I'd say the trolley is pretty reliable. There are times when a trolley might break down and they get backed up a bit, but that's usually only every few months, if that.

As far as troublemakers/homeless, yes there are some. But I'd say they are also outnumbered by "normal" people during rush hour. I've never personally had any issues with them, aside from having to smell them occasionally... So as far as safety and cleanliness, the trolley's not bad. I've never felt unsafe (as a 30yo female), though I'm always riding during the daytime.

Having to take the bus to/from a trolley stop would add a somewhat significant amount of time to your trip depending on distance, so definitely try to find a place that is nearby a trolley stop. I take a bus from the Old Town station to my work but it's only 5 stops so it's not too bad.
