i just earned my b.s. in business administration, emphasizing in marketing - IMC at sdsu, but i don't know where all the marketing jobs in this city are centered? and if they're not centered, which parts of the city have lots of jobs for my type of degree?

how easy is it for me to get a job right now with my degree? i earned a 3.30 gpa and i'm 23/m. i am unwilling to move outside of san diego and preferrably want a job within the boundary of chula vista and as far north as sorrento valley and la jolla and as east as la mesa and up and down the 15 corridor up to maybe poway. i love this city and plan on dying here too. please help! thank you

Getting started in Marketing is very tough anywhere and double-tough in San Diego which does not have the large corporate presence that typically uses new grads. Starting salaries are usually very low and expectations are high. If possible, I would pursue the internship route through your school. If you have to pound the pavement, look for jobs with a clear path to the position you want even if you can't find what you are looking for immediately.

Most corporate / white collar jobs are in the Sorrento Mesa / Carmel Valley / UTC area with some clusters in RB, Downtown, Mission Valley and eastern Poway. Most of the stuff downtown tends to be law / government and as such not a huge amount of marketing jobs there.

I'm a grad of SDSU (2005) and I work in marketing. I work in Kearny Mesa, which is totally central and full of businesses. Look on craigslist.org and indeed.com

Unfortunately, I think the SD market is so saturated with new grads (from 4 major universities in the area), that it's hard to find a good-paying job out of college...wherever you're interested, some other grad is usually willing to do the job for $1,000 less which ruins it for you...especially in marketing....but you'll find something. Don't worry.

Unhappy My experience and seeking advice from Sassberto

I came across this thread and just wanted to say that after posting back in April I have made 4 trips down to SD...and just recently for the Jobing.com fair at the convention center. Spoke to several employers and was basically told that at the moment the job market in SD is in turmoil due to several factors that included like 5 universities turning out graduates in the area. I have 5 years prior experience working for Bacara Resort here in Santa Barbara as a concierge and was bluntly told that I would probably be hired for front desk at a wage of 10-11 an hour at the hotel del coronado. That is bad news considering that I was getting 12 to start here in SB. When I quit I ended around 14 an hour. Plus I graduated from UCSB last year and have come to wonder if I will get a 30k salary or more by moving to San Diego? What I have learned is that the market for graphic designers and artists is slim...I mean there are openings but EXPERIENCE (i.e. 2-5 yrs) is required. Anyway, I just wanted to ask Sassberto if it would be wise for someone like me to forget about San Diego county and instead head back to my hometown of Inland Empire because maybe there might be more job opportunities there? Im still in Santa Barbara, but I personally do not agree with the idea that I should get $10 an hour and be a part of the "rat race". Anyway Im not from San Diego but within the last two months I have learned that the entry level jobs are far and few between.

a sincere thanks to all the responses thus far. i haven't been seriously looking into what job opportunities i will submit my resume to just yet. i'm giving myself another 2 weeks to a month and get a feel on all of the job openings that pertain to my degree first. what i have noticed, however, is that it seems most jobs care more about experience (2 to 5 years) then college degrees. anyone else notice this? also, most of the jobs seem to be dirty cold calling or canvas/door to door kind of junk in the sales/marketing listings. i am UNWILLING to do that. i didn't study my ass off for 5 years to get a job that straight up invades the privacy of others. anyway, i agree. the san diego job market looks HORRIBLE from my point of reference and i certainly hope it gets better.

i'll check in later

Experience trumps all, but you still need the degree. Stay away from anything involving telemarketing, door-to-door, or in-public sales.

Good luck getting a good marketing job w/out first starting out doing the "grunt" work of cold calling, etc. Like previous posters have mentioned, there are MANY other people in this market willing to do all of this and, cheap. Once you have some experience, you'll be more able to get the kind of job you're looking for.
