Well, I count myself lucky that I am able to afford living in San Diego.

My boyfriend and I found a nice 2-bedroom in La Jolla for only $1200.00 per month, which is reasonable since we split everything... so it's $600 for each of us.

Having lived mostly in the Gaslamp and then in Mission Valley, we are shockingly ignorant when it comes to the neighborhood.

Is it as hoity-toity as everyone says? Or are there enclaves of down-to-earth folks like we are?

It is across from UTC, if that helps.

I personally think the smaller towns up there like Solana Beach, Del Mar, etc. are a bit more "hoity-toity" than La Jolla... I mean you definitely still get that in LJ but it's also a much bigger community so there are more different types of people. I think the presence of UCSD also helps tone down the stuffiness. At any rate that's a good price for a 2BR up there.

Thanks! I know the price is good, but I think it has to do with the fact that it's an older building (1970s wood paneling and all), plus the carpet really needs replacing, but my BF and I jumped at the chance to pay a reasonable rent in a great location.

There are many people who would tell you UTC is not La Jolla. If you live on the other side of the 5 and your address says San diego, you are really in the UTC area, not the 'downtown' la jolla area. So you will see a lot of college kids, graduate students, etc. And UCSD isn't san diego state. It's more engineering and science majors compared to liberal arts party majors. They exist, but nothing like san diego state.

So if you are near UTC, it's not really "nose in the air" types.

UTC isn't La Jolla, it's just UTC.

My co-worker used to live across from the mall and loved the location. He said it was great for him during his post-doc. They ended up moving to get a single family house but they had to go all the way to La Mesa in order to afford it! It's a really convenient location.
