It is amazing, there is nowhere else in the country that has the combination of people, weather, attractions, and laid back vibe.

Well, La Jolla is one of the best particular places on Earth really. And there are some very scenic areas in San Diego. But of course, there are bad areas, poverty, crime, homelessness like any place, but you won't see photos in tourist guides. La Jolla is really the most beautiful spot of CA coast except maybe the 17-mile drive in Pebble Beach and Carmel's main beach. The rest of SD is also pretty but the coastline is generally flat with no mountains behind it, so IMO not quite as beautiful as, say, SF or Vancouver. But La Jolla proper is truly superb, almost perfect.

La Jolla is pretty much as good as it gets. If you keep looking, you'll probably find some, let's just say "less nice" areas.

La Jolla is pretty but not my cup of tea. I haven't bothered to go there since I moved back. If you want to find me at the beach try Ocean Beach. I'm in to funky, not upscale. I did drive up that way to go to the Institute of Oceanography a couple of times and it was a lovely area. But I knew that, I am an old time San Diegan. It's probably pretty to live in if you can afford it (I can't) but for hanging out, not my cup of tea.

Ahhh, La Jolla. I lived there with roommates in '05 and '06. Beautiful community; not as uptight and pretentious as some upscale areas of Los Angeles county, and the beach is cleaner. Most of the coast in San Diego is pretty.

Also, what I liked about the area, in general, is that there are not a lot of box stores and chains. Which, IMO, makes a neighborhood that much more appealing.

Great choice if you decide to move there!

Contrary to my screen name, I am a native to Phoenix Arizona. San Diego was always my escape. I would vacation there every year. I absolutely love San Diego, and I would much rather live there than were I live now (Las Vegas). To you question, unfortunately there is only one bad thing about San Diego, and it is a biggie. The cost of living is absolutely insane. It is very expensive. However, it is that way for a reason. If it wasn't, EVERYONE would live there.

It gonna have the same problems as any other city, areas of crime, poverty, some crappy people, traffic. Some things more unqiue to SD would be a high cost of living with a mediocre job market.

I think other cities have suburbs and areas just as nice as San Diego, it generally won't have as much natural beauty but there are very nice areas in all those cities you mentioned. The wealthy suburbs of places like NYC, Chicago, Miami, Phoenix, are all very nice and up to par with anything in SD, except for the natural beauty and climate.

It's not the most amazing place on earth or anything but SD is a very nice and enjoyable city to live in overall imo but does have the typical big city/metro problems as most places.

You're dreaming. That's not a bad thing!

There are bad things about any place. And there are good things about any place. You already know that, if you're intelligent enough to be in marine biology. But you're dreaming. That's not a bad thing!

Photos are tiny slices of reality that are out-of-date ten minutes after they're taken. The amazing suburb in Chicago that looks like La Jolla is named Winnetka. I can't tell you the names of the comparable suburbs for New York or Phoenix or Miami because I haven't lived there.

Places like La Jolla aren't unique. But they are pretty special. So, go for it!
