I've got a job offer in the bay area (including relo), it's only $90000, or only 9000 more than I am making now in LA. Will that be enough?? We own a place in Long Beach, of course we would never be able to sell it without losing our ass but I'm wondering if we can at least approximate our socal lifestyle while renting with that little money. My wife would have to find a job, but I miss the bay area (went to school at cal) and we are excited for the opportunity.

to clarify job is in SF and we would likely rent a house for around $2400 to $2500 depending on what we could get in rental from our house down here. Likely would be in peninsula or possibly mill valley area.

Southern Marin and San Mateo Counties are both expensive areas, possibly look in the East Bay for areas that are just as nice but a lot cheaper. Depends on where you work though, the East Bay is easy for getting to downtown SF but not so easy for the Peninsula or Silicon Valley.

Or east bay is not so easy to get home in the PM from the Peninsula. It isn't so awful in the morning. I am averaging 40 minutes to San MAteo from Oakland. Going home is either, wait till 7 so it takes 40 minutes or it takes 60-90 minutes from about 4:45-6:45.

thanks, I actually like the east bay, alameda is cool, or rock ridge, but I don't think I can convince my wife.

Rockridge to downtown SF is 20 minutes on BART. Millbrae would probably be like 35+ minutes, and other parts of the Peninsula have no BART access so you either drive which means expensive parking or or take Caltrain which dumps you off a 20 minute walk from downtown SF. From Marin you can either take pokey ferries (which you have to drive to in Marin first) or take the GGT buses which would probably be like an hour from Mill Valley. I don't really see any difference between parts of the East Bay like Lafayette compared with the Peninsula or Marin other than that it's cheaper and has BART.

It goes though the trans-bay tunnel resting on the floor of the bay.

So far, the tunnel has proved to be very reliable... it was intact after the earthquake took out the bay bridge in the same area.

If you are making the move and renting and you have a decent budget, why not live in SF and not deal with commute hassles or BART passes ? You could get a 2-bedroom apartment in a nice location or a large 1 bedroom in Marina, Russian Hill or Pac Heights.
