The crime of Richmond District is that it is F$%^# cold!!

Otherwise, that area is one of the the safest if not the safest in SF.

Start here and also look up its census data on census.gov for incomes:

Richmond District, San Francisco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are various crime map websites you can view, I know google does one for SF. The Richmond District really is one of the lowest crime parts of SF. I think there's a murder like once every 5 years on average or something, though sometimes there are murders in GG Park.

It's one of the more family oriented neighborhoods. Often referred by locals as "The Avenues", it tends to be inhabited by more established local San Franciscans. There are probably far more home owners in this neighborhood than renters. Weather is more cold/foggy but burns off more readily as you work your way eastward.

It's historically middle class/upper middle class and has a large Asian and Russian population (at least when I used to live there).

Other than minor property crime (a lot of car break-ins and vandalism) it's one of the safest neighborhoods and far fewer noticeable homeless.

I can't speak for "health" other than there's a major well regarded hospital, California Pacific Med Center (my kids were born there) that is fantastic and easy to get to.

The Richmond District is bordered by GG Park and Presidio...and to the west is Ocean Beach. I have lived in outer Richmond District for the last eight months, it is a bit of a trek to and from the rest of the city, especially on Muni. The 38-Geary runs all night, which is great. But it is generally a very safe, quiet neigborhood and is surrounded by lots of natural beauty and hiking trails. Rents are a little more affordable and, in my opinion, generally nicer than Outer Sunset (which might have comparable rents).

Well as for history: the Richmond was originally sand dunes, and was developed mostly in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Nowadays it has a large Asian population that is mostly Chinese, to the point that much of Clement street and the immediate surrounding area is SF's second Chinatown. There's also a pretty decent presence of Russians in the Richmond.

wealth? it's not all the same...but majority middle class, with some poorer people (mostly immigrants i'd say for the poorer residents), and some very rich people.

health? Lol, pretty good. There are a couple hospitals, no bad pollution problems or anything, and the average life expectacy is probably perfectly fine by US standards

As for crime: The Richmond is about as safe as a large, dense neighborhood with no poverty problems, in a city of a moderately high crime rate can be...that is to say, pretty safe 99% of the time (but with some of the usual crime problems present in this city: some robberies, vandalism, etc). One of SF's most crime-ridden bus lines, the 38, bisects the Richmond, and while much of that crime is probably due to the fact that the 38 also passes through the Fillmore and Tenderloin (not to mention sheer passenger volume, as it's the city's busiest bus line), i think that alone disqualifies the Richmond District from being considered the safest part of SF, as someone else suggested it may be...there are definitely less crime-afflicted parts of the city if you ask me, though the Richmond is not at all in a bad position itself; It's a nice neighborhood.

not true, at least for recent years:

Richmond murders:

2006 - 1 (corner store owner shot dead during robbery)
2007 - 1 (homeless man stabbed to death near edge of Golden Gate park)
2008 - 2 (man biking home was shot dead by men who were driving by and got in an argument with him + a dead body found at Ocean Beach)
2009 - 1 (man stabbed to death at random, at Office Max, by a crazy dude)
2010 - 1 (man shot dead in an apartment)

So it's worse than "once every 5 years", but it definitely has a very low murder rate for an area in the US with tens of thousands of residents.
