I started working at Beale and Howard recently and couldn't believe the condition of Howard Street around there. The roads in the area seem to be a total warzone (although some of this might also be due to the Transbay Terminal Construction).
It got me thinking which roads most desperately need to be repaved.
Here's my list:

- Howard Street around Fremont and Beale
- Market Street
- Columbus Ave
- Sansome Street north of California
- North Van Ness

Pretty much every street in Oakland. "Oh! Don't raise mah taxes, I'd die if you raised my taxes! Oops, now that last pothole just killed my luxury car's axles."

Wow. I didn't realize Oakland was quite that bad. I at least thought it was on par with San Francisco.

Columbus Ave is really, REALLY bad. Especially the stretch between Green and Broadway. It's akin to how I imagine roads in Afghanistan are.

Everywhere. :P

I can't think of anywhere with good roads. It is a state-wide issue. I guess Emeryville is OK. But maybe that's it.

I don't think Oakland is worse than SF. They have been repaving lots of major streets lately. Macarthur is looking good in North Oakland.

Oakland is pretty bad from what I've seen on my bike, some streets are repaved for a couple blocks but then you hit a stretch for 2 miles with potholes everywhere. College Ave and Telegraph are awful and honestly dangerous if you're on a bike, you really have to pay attention or you'll bust a wheel or get knocked off your bike if you aren't careful. Berkeley has crappy parts but as soon as you hit the city line from Oakland the streets often go from warzone-quality to nice and repaved. Emeryville has crappy roads with tons of potholes if you're out in the warehouse areas.

If you want to see nice roads, go up into the hills around Santa Cruz, like in the Bonny Doon area. The roads are all new and freshly paved. They must've spent a ton of money building all those roads but there's hardly anyone living up there, I guess with less wear and tear they hold up better.

Potholes are bad in parts of San Mateo, Belmont and Redwood City.

Santa Cruz has horrible roads too, atleast in the city proper. My brother and all the other avid skaters there had to get special cruiser boards just to navigate the messed up pavement. Roads havent been paved since the first draftees left for 'Nam.

Why is this such an issue around California? Without the freezing and thawing that a lot of other states need to deal with, I would have thought California would have some of the better roads in the U.S.
