Otherwise, we could have just moved into the 'burbs and saved ourselves some money.
I'm not really looking in the Sunset either, but the inner Sunset (9th/Irving and environs) is pretty nice with lots of amenities.

I bet the answer to this isn't what I want to hear, but it might be good to hear people's experiences....

Since it seems to take people a few months to find an apt in SF, how do you handle giving your notice to the apt you are moving out of? In other cities I just put my notice in a month in advance, and not being able to find an apt by the end of my lease was never a worry. It doesn't seem like this would be the case here, giving yourself just 30 days to find an apt here seems very risky.

So, do people here just have to pay an extra month's rent on the apt they are moving out of, just to guarantee they will have housing?

I currently live in Oakland, in a decent neighborhood....it was incredibly easy to find a place.

When we were looking at apartments, almost every place had someone living it in at the time. When we found our place, we couldn't even move in for 3 weeks, so we only had a week or so of overlap in our leases.
