There is that one 100 year old bar now populated by hipsters and produce workers.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

Yeah I was going to say there's a 20:1 ratio of non-ghetto to ghetto, but I don't think there are any "ghetto" establishments in JLS, unless you count Everett & Jones, because black people go there. Merchants is divey, but not ghetto

i disagree jack london square removed the "casual dining restaurants" and brought in places that would appeal to foodies.

haven-celebrity chef kim alter owned by daniel pattterson of coi and plum
boca nova- raved about in the new york times.

forge- wood oven pizza
lungomere- regional italian with housemade pasta

there is still scotts and the steak place for octonegerians.

the chicken and waffles place and everett and jones seem to be for tourist because why even go there with b-side barbeque and Lukas awesome chicken/waffles?

My fave spot near jack london is Chop Bar! I hate to tell anyone to go there because it makes it harder for me to get a table. Bsically everything on the menu is delicious, including the cocktails. ANd the service is friendly. Good atmosphere and a very Oakland crowd (read this as super diverse in ethnicity, age and class).

But there is also that new semi-fancy mexican plane on broadway that I am forgetting the name of that is on my list. I like the Night Light. It is a semi-dive bar, with nicer drinks and atmosphere. They have excellent housemade brandied cherries. Makes you want to get a manhattan or Shirley temple. Lungomare is good, the drinks are great.

OP: put the eat real fest on your calendar now. It is a super fun food festival in September timeframe. Lots of tasty food, all priced $5 and under (local/seasonal/organic/all the bay area foodie buzzwords)

100% agreed. Every once and a while (less and less frequently these days) you'll run into a sketchy person or two. But ghetto? Not at all, and not for many years.

There are a few blocks I don't like to walk around by myself, because they are dark and have little foot traffic. But not unsafe (i.e. you feel like you need to be on hyper alert.)

Don't forget about Beer Revolution.

JLS area has come a long way in four years or so. There are restaurants popping up in even borderline sketchy/industrial areas. For example look where Nido showed up - directly across from the Shell station and next to the freeway entrance.

Sweet Jimmie's was the last club in JLS that was considered ghetto but it got shut down after the shooting.

Kincaid's? That place can be a little rowdy sometimes.

Wasn't Sweet Jimmy's up around 20th & SP? Or did it move? I remember Mingles got shut down in '06 after a pregnant woman was shot.
