Teenagers hang out at the mall, not grown adults. Well, at least not the grown adult men I hang out with. Women are a different story.

Trying on clothes is the biggest factor in me limiting my clothing purchases online. I do some buying online if I see particularly good deals but prefer to try things on first in a physical location. To get the better price in person, I try to look for outlet stores or times when clothes are on sale.

Another thing I noticed is that shopping in the bay really does not have a good vibe like in NYC or LA.

In LA you have Rodeo Drive, Melrose, Robertson in WeHo, 3rd street in Santa Monica, just really nothing compares in the bay.

Union Square is OK, if you can get past the street beggars, feces, and purse snatchers.

Union Square area in my opinion is one of the best shopping areas of the country. It gets away from the boring cookie cutter strip malls most of the country is plagued with and brings a NYC vibe to NorCal. The area is always booming with people shopping and tourists visiting. Yes it has its problems but what city doesn't have problems that need fixing. Literally have never had a problem shopping in the area, no feces (pee maybe lol).

-Getting away from union square, Fillmore St. & University Avenue/Stanford Shopping Center are quaint outdoor areas that have an up and coming vibe with retail pouring into the already existing core of local shops.

-Melrose & Robertson are quite newly popular and have sat quietly in LA, and it is amazing to see such growth, but is expected for an area as large in population as LA.

-3rd Street in Santa Monica has all the same old shops, it just has the luxury of being near a popular boardwalk/beach that elevates it, other than that nothing special.

-Rodeo Drive is world class very few city can compare to the wealth/tourism that area boasts.

Excellent post.

Not just Rodeo but indeed the whole Golden Triangle is quite chic and really the only shopping district on the West Coast that might have more upscale boutiques than Union Square, but that's because it serves the massive LA market.

On the other hand, the Union Square area is much more urban, has the largest department stores on the West Coast and exudes the closest thing to a NYC vibe between the Pacific Ocean and Chicago and there are 500+ retailers in Downtown SF, which is astounding.

Either way, one cant lose as far as shopping.

Yea but why would you want to replicate an NYC shopping experience? I thought SF supposedly had it's own identity?

And the whole "what city doesn't have problems" is really a straw man. Most cities do not have nut-bag homeless, degenerates, and bodily fluids/masses near an "upscale" shopping district. Heck you don't even see that on State Street or Michigan Ave in Chicago. And Chicago is a hard hat/ lunch pail town.

Not saying union square is not upscale, just that it is a generic wanna be NYC type of experience. Except with crappy pizza and lot's of lowlifes hanging around. God I miss Rodeo Drive

Also, LA has much better local fashion boutiques as well. LA is a global fashion capital and the bay area just can not compare to the quality of shopping, quantity of shopping, fashion innovation, and good looking people that can be found everyday in the LA area. SF seems like it is aspiring to emulate New York, but comes off as very cheesy middle America, in terms of shopping vibe.

You go shopping on Rodeo Drive and you see super models shopping for casual summer attire. You go shopping in Union Square and you see women who look like the ugly chick who plays the main character on HBO's "girls" (which is 'hot' for SF).

Hahahaha It's so pathetically sad that there are so few downtowns in this country that have top notch shopping that nowadays that by instinct we say that what we found in SF is reminiscient of NYC.

New York
San Francisco
Chicago

Are really the only 3 downtown/ urban districts in the country that have truly world class shopping.

We are blessed to not have just boring malls/ lifestyle centers and botox-ridden quasi-suburban areas as the only game in town as far as shopping. Thank You Jeezus.
