That's why I said MIGHT, since I wasn't sure... I've had a few Black friends from there, so figured at least it's not "racially tense," since they seemed to like it. But like you said, Oakland is probably the best bet for finding a nice Black neighborhood.

To the OP: Id suggest staying on the other side of the hill from the 680 corridor. even if you can not find a black neighborhood, the east bay is welcoming to blacks unlike most of california. i live in berkeley and here there are plenty of black folks particulalry north berkeley. and you will find there is not a cohesive effort to price blacks out of this area unlike some cities which i will not mention.

To be honest id check out oakland, but thats all a block by block basis. black neighborhoods can be hit or miss out that way. some are family neighborhoods with neighbors who know each other on a first name basis, others are war zones.

To the OP. A note about the peninsula region. The cities that I include here if you look on the map include San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and so forth on up to San Francisco. The closer you get to highway 280, the fewer black people you find because of its exclusivity and associated price. Virtually no black people in Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Saratoga, and such. Highway 101 and the neighborhoods that surround it tend to be less desirable or industrial. There are no black communities in this region that fit your profile. If you do find a black concentration in any of these areas, it is more likely that it's in a low-income, undesirable area with a significant amount of crime. To live in this portion of the bay area as a black person, it is critical that you be accustomed to NOT being around black people. It is possbile to go days without seeing another black person here unless you pass through downtown San Jose, through East Palo Alto/ East Menlo Park, or catch a glimpse of one passing in a car. The South Bay and Peninsula are not inhabited by that many blacks. The few that are in this region are quite scattered.

There are really not many blacks left on the peninsula. Hispanics have taken over in recent years, even in EPA. All in all, it would be a good idea to stay on the other side of the bay.

Pittsburg/Bay Point in Contra Costa County has a good sized black population. Antioch's is growing also. Those are the most affordable area's in the bay area.

Richmond is even more affordable, actually, but there's a good reason for that. You don't want to be caught around there if you're a black man from out of town.
