From the East Bay you can also AC Transit with a bike:

Bikes on Buses | AC Transit

You should also seriously consider getting a folding bike if you plan on using mass transit. Resolves a lot of the issues with bikes on BART and Buses.

Thanks very much. This is all incredibly helpful. I was planning to buy a beater and lock it up, so between that and a little research, it looks like this is doable.

If you have a beater and lock well your bike should be fine. Most of the inner east bay stations have dozens or hundreds of spots (MacArthur has about 250 bike spots and more coming).

I have parked all day at MacArthur no issue. But parked in the evening at 19th and someone tried to steal my basket.
I just wanted add that the new attended bike parking station at 19th and Broadway is free. I think that is incredible.

I would be wary parking my bike at MacArthur but maybe it is okay. I read that North Berkeley Station is the worst in bike thefts. Then again, maybe I am just being a little to cautious.

Yeah, I use the new BikeStation at 19th every day. It's freaking AWESOME! Roll up, say hi to Thomas(the attendant), sign in/grab a ticket and go about my day knowing my bike is safe.

I have a couple of friends that live in Berkeley and ride everyday to Jack London Square to board the ferry to South City. There are other ferries that go to San Francisco too. Nothing beats a ferry commute to work. Here is the website for info.

I also take the ferry but coming from Oakland.

Actually Dublin has the most thefts. The highest theft isn't where you think it is. MacArthur is middle of the pack. And has lots of bikelink lockers.
