It might be generational. I know exactly what you mean about priorities. I fall into the millenial category, and many of my friends back home complain about being broke. However, they also make poor money choices such as buying the latest iphone, computer, buying expensive headphones, etc. Then they turn around and moan about their student loans. I'm really tempted to call them out on it.

I always bring my lunch, mostly because eating out here is expensive and if that's an extra $50 a week for me to save, then I'm fine with that. So many of my coworkers go out for lunch everyday which is just insane.

I vaguely remember these Portland Loos everyone is talking about. I will have to take a closer look next time I'm there.

I'm starting to think that women teens and college students get their first jobs, they're enthralled with the idea that they're making their own money now, so they get carried away with spending it. They think that working is about getting money to spend. Like this is what adulthood is about, making money to buy your own stuff. It takes some of them awhile to realize there's a lot more to it than that.

I really like Portland, used to love SF. We met family in Portland for the holidays last year, and the streets seemed cleaner & safer of the 2; but I was saddened to see 5 different informal homeless encampments that we drove past every time we left our hotel...just groups of tents & shopping carts & people. One was just out in the open on a concrete traffic island between busy streets. There must have been at least 50 people in each group. It was mild weather, no rain. If there are that many encampments in the middle of the city, under bridges, etc., as described, how many more are in the woods, etc.?

I've been to Paris, in different arrondisements, not just the tourists ones, & Paris- style loos were always presentable...and there are many homeless in Paris. So, what is the difference? Why are they trashed in the U.S.? I won't even share what my SIL encounters, commuting daily for work on the BART.

This article in the Chronicle today captures my feelings really well

Our little town can't measure up to real big cities

I have never missed an election, I have attended community meetings, volunteered to explain ballot measures to neighborhood associations, written letters to my supervisor and mayor, and I clean up my street once a month. What do you do?

I love and enjoy my state. I'm glad you do something other than just complain. Forgive me for thinking you were one of those.
