I'm working on a children's book and wonder if there is a Bay Area plant that meets these criteria:
blooms in spring (possibly on hillsides), is colorful and non-toxic to animals, and could also be found in nearby forests? Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Neither of these is a perfect fit, but in case you receive no other suggestions: consider sticky monkey flower -- Sticky Monkey Flower - Presidio of San Francisco (U.S. National Park Service) -- and nasturtium -- How Long Does It Take for Nasturtiums to Grow? | Home Guides | SF Gate .

Oxalis oregana could possibly be a fit.

In the deep woods, there aren't many flowers, because of the lack of sunshine. Up here in the redwood forest, though, in spring are white trilliums and carpets of shamrocks that are covered in white or pink/red flowers. Very pretty.

The trilliums are found here as single flowers here and there, not in carpets of flowers like some of the images above, but the shamrocks are found in areas that are covered in red or white star-shaped flowers. Very magical. The colors in the forest are pastels for the most part. Nothing bright. At least not up here in the Jedediah Smith redwoods.

I can't find the perfect photos for you - I'll have to be sure and take a bunch next year :-)

I wanted to mention the California poppies. They can cover hillsides in bright orange. They need sunshine to flower, though, so they aren't found in the forests, as a rule.

There are many succulents & cactus that get beautiful blooms/flowers. Many of them cover hillsides or meadows.
