  • Prevalence of well-educated people
  • Cultural diversity (compared to the rest of the country)
  • Large amount of people who think liberally (yes, this is a positive for me)
  • Access to fresh food (due to proximity to where much of it is grown), and the great amount of mid-tier food that's awesome (the Bay Area kills it in the $10-20 range - which is where most of my meals out are)
  • Great weather that makes doing things outside 365 days a year very easy (even when it's raining) - to go with that, I really love the microclimates (want cooler/hotter weather? drier/wetter weather? you can likely find it, and probably only 15-20 miles away), and I really love the fog of the coast
  • Large amount of friends (and some family) that I've built up here
  • Access to 3 large cities that each have their own unique take on things (SF, Oak, and SJ all are interesting places in their own ways)
  • Access to good transit (compared to the rest of the US) that lets me go car-free (even in the suburbs)

All of those taken together make living here worth it, despite the asinine cost of living. Many areas in the country have some aspects of this (i.e. some places have great weather/hiking/backpacking, but have no jobs - some have lots of jobs, but are terribly boring or don't have great access to great natural surroundings)...I think only a couple of other places come close to having many of these things for me (Portland, Seattle, maybe Denver), but I'm comfortable where I am now and don't see myself leaving anytime soon.

Things I wish were better:
  • Cost of living (obviously)
  • To go with COL, income inequality
  • Transit (it's good - but not great, and could be so much better)
  • Did I mention cost of living?...
There you go again. Oh Hockey, you do crack me up though. Thanks!

Hey, no need to single me out. Everyone except you named more than one item. I'm just following their lead.

My family here, great career opportunities in my field, diverse culture, educated people, natural beauty, great restaurants.

Ditto Also, great date-night options (theater, concerts, festivals, etc)!

I moved away 2 years ago, and the one thing I really miss is having lots of things to do. Especially lots of classes, like recreation department adult classes like crafts and cooking, etc., and senior bus trips.

If I can mention one more it would be shopping. God, I miss Trader Joes!

Apparently you are obsessed with my opinions. I'm flattered, I think.
