My personal fav is Hong Kong Lounge (they have 2 locations in the Richmond that aren't too far from each other).

If I'm lazy and don't want to go all the way to the other side of the city I'll do City View, but it's not cheap.

Yank Sing is expensive and I didn't find it to be any better than other places.

Lai Hong - Was going to suggest it until I checked Yelp and saw the really poor health score. Well, the egg yolk buns were good.

Outside of the city, others mentioned Hong Kong Flower Lounge. I've been here once. I'm pretty sure they've changed their name at least 2 other times (which now has me wondering why, especially after that local article about restaurants doing that after getting low health scores). When I went there the food was fine, but that was 3 years ago.

Yank Sing is popular with White people, they have good dim sum, but places like Hong Kong Flower Lounge are just as good and half the price if not cheaper

For what it's worth Yank Sing is popular with the Japanese ... I'm sure good but overpriced?

This isn't Dim Sum, but it's an amazing restaurant nonetheless... San Tung. It's located in the Innner Sunset district, near Golden Gate Park. Make sure you order the wings! The lines get outrageously long, so I'd recomend going there early or going there for lunch.
Unless its close, its best the tourists just go to the tourist traps in Chinatown.

You fly all the way to San Francisco, but then eat crappy Chinese food you could have got from home instead of just taking a 30 minute muni or bart ride? I travel a lot and I always love going to the local areas when it comes to food. Just me anyways, food is life.

We always go to New Asia in Chinatown. It's an old fashioned Dim Sum palace; huge dining room with traditional rolling cart service. Clientele is easily 90% Chinese. Best Dim Sum experience in Chinatown IMHO.
