Yeah cause I'm sure that the real estate holding that Bill Gates has haven't made him the kind of money he would have saved by never moving out of his parent's house and still sleeping in that twin bed he had in high school.

As a very low-income senior, just a couple of points regarding these seniors wanting to stay in the SF Bay Area.

Good healthcare.

Good weather where they don't have to worry about slipping on ice, or heat stroke, or humidity, and good air quality.

Good transportation options for people who can't drive - including city/county resources like Dial a Ride, etc.

Walkable neighborhoods.

My grandmother lived in Oakland, and both my parents grew up there. My grandmother never drove. She took the bus and walked to everything she needed. She lived in subsidized housing near Lake Merritt, she had Kaiser, she was legally deaf and had plenty of resources and good weather and family nearby.

There are just soooo many more resources for seniors in the SF Bay Area where there is more money for such things.

Oh, and to the people saying they should have just planned better. My grandmother worked and became deaf later in life, and could no longer work because of her disability. Could she have planned that?

Stuff happens that you never plan ahead for. And really, so what if they "could" have planned better. Should we throw them all into the ocean because they didn't plan better in the 1950's?

How silly.

He had rich lawyer parents, they could have bought a house in Albuquerque for bill gates to save him money

I am talking about the 50's and 60's, not the 40's and until now so you were you. But I don't expect you to take my word for it, so here you go:

For young Americans, living with their parents is now the norm - CBS News

Even if you moved out it was still way easier to earn 5k back then and save 2k than save 200k and earn earn 300k today.

Of course not. Nobody wants to do that. The laws won't allow it.

So why do seniors have to live in one of the most expensive areas in the country such as Oakland or anywhere in the Bay Area? I assume seniors don't have children or are working. There are many places outside of the Bay Area that are a lot cheaper.
