SF itself has prob more street crime than many comparable parts of LA or NYC...SF is a mockably socialist town, w/an inept police dept vs LA or NYC

Any semi-intelligent person knows where to live/work in SF region...and if drive by own car everywhere to secured office/home garages and valet parking in front of restaurants, etc...one has essentially zero risk of violent crime...sort of like middle/upper-income suburbanites or affluent yuppies in any major urban region anywhere in US...not very complicated to avoid crime....

Pay no attention to the out of state poster trolls....
You mean the Nortenos and Surenos? They have spread are up and down the state. But it is much more heavily concentrated in the southern half of the state.
I agree nella925.

All the cold medicine makes me skip words by accident, I apologize for the somewhat unintelligible previous post of mine....

really i meant to write: "...They have spread up and down the state....I agree with nella925"

thank you, thank you, I believe I will be heavily medicated for the rest of the week, don't forget to tip your servers...

I don't know if it's worse, because I've never lived in southern California. But it is a problem here. In 9th grade in Morgan Hill, some of the bullies that had been pushing me around suddenly started hanging around with different people, and in the same spots, and wearing the same clothes all the time. The same guy who had been beating me up asked me in this stiff, strange voice for a dollar as I walked past his new pack of hoodlums. Thinking nothing of it, I gave him a dollar. He lifted his chin and waved me on. Thinking back on it, that simple motion may very well have saved my life. I never saw him in high school so I suspect he probably wound up in juvenile hall for something or other.

Anyway, my classmates told me you could always buy drugs on the playground during lunchtime from the gang bangers. This was in the late '90s, so the demographics might have changed a bit now, but the gangs are certainly still around and they're in the school systems.

Really Lulu? A BIG problem? Currently? Why don't you tell us how big of a problem exactly. What are some of the Asian gangs you're referring to? What kind of crimes and how many of them have they committed? I mean since you know so much and all. LOL Moderator cut: Personal attack

In response to the OP, no not even close. There are plenty of gangs here and we have our fare share of gang-related crime. But its not like in LA where there's carved out gang territory in every hood and gangs warring with many different rivals, as well as racially motivated gang crime. We have stuff in pockets and it is to be taken seriously, but LA is on another level unmatched IMO by anywhere except Chicago.

First of all, I agree with jman650, pay no attention to the out-of-state posts, some people like to paint everything as a nightmare regardless of whether or not they possess the necessary information to back up the claim. Anyway, the Bay Area is known to have gang activity, but you won't find anything close to what goes on in LA or Chicago, where gangs war along neighborhood and increasingly, even racial lines. In fact, the Bloods and Crips never dared to try and stake out any turf in Oakland because the local black gangs would never stand for it; unlike down in LA up here what does go on is mostly about drug turf, not neighborhood boundaries. They did spread to other cities in the west, such as Portland and Las Vegas, but Oakland, never.

Recently, there was a story on local TV about 29 MS-13 members being rounded up by the cops in Oakland, SF, and Richmond, but I think that MS-13 has spread all throughout the country (nothing on the scale of their presence down in SoCal). Chinatown in SF is known to have Triad activity, but their primary focus is the illegal fireworks sold there, more like white-collar criminals or the Mafia than any street gang, I'm sure you'll never even see them.
