I'm looking to relocate to San Francisco in the next month, I'm familiar with the city but not as much with the surrounding areas.

I'd like to live somewhere that has a warm night air, something not found in the city, and wanted to know if this is available either in Marin or the East Bay. Any help would be appreciated.

The further inland you get from the ocean, the warmer the weather will be. Go for the East Bay.

In order to have the type of warm night air that is typical in summer in the interior of the US (which is what I assume you are looking for) you'd need to live at least in the San Joaquin or Sacramento Valley (together known as the Central Valley) - we simply do not have that anywhere in the Bay Area. Even in Livermore, with rare exceptions lasting a day or two, it goes down into the 60s or even upper 50s by late evening in summer. Even in the Central Valley you may be disappointed. Reason for this? We generally do not have humidity when / where it's warm. The only humid places are near the water and in summer, the Low Deserts of SE California. The lack of humidity in most places means the heat radiates rapidly away after sun down. You may find the only places in California meeting your criteria may be the Low Desert areas (Salton Sea Basin, Colorado River, etc).

Of course, there is a trade off. The places in this state with true, reliable, warm season night warmth, are brutally hot during the warm season days (100F and on up ... in some cases way, way up ... 115F anyone?). Meanwhile, places where it gets to 85F during the day will generally be cool at night.

What we give up in terms of needing a sweater at night we make up for with lower AC bills.

Ditto what BayAreaHillybilly said. I have lived all over the Bay Area and throughout Los Angeles and have never experienced a midwestern-style warm night here. But look on the bright side...you will never have to sweat and stick to your sheets again because of the yucky hot and humid nighttime temps!

You can't live any further west than Concord if you hope for any warm air at night. If you think you'll get warm night air anywhere in or very near to SF, sorry, you may as well with for the next rain storm to dump down diamonds. I'm 20 minutes from the city and have been turning on my heater at night this last week. It gets cooler in the city.

Certainly the East Bay is your best bet. Will you being working in the city? You have to consider the commute. The central valley is warm as well, one thing we loved about Sacramento was the opposite from what you want, the nights always cooled down.

"You do realize this is the Bay Area, don't you?" is what my fiance just said when I read him this. Yeah, you have to go inland a good ways.
